No-one has presented any proof whatsoever that any of this is true. Factually, there are a limited number of actual oil suppliers in this country that supply the same oil specs product under a variety of different marketing names.
All the customers who pay more to have service done at your dealership vs a gas station or an independent mechanic are "victims" of the same mentality. Dealerships spend a lot of time and effort convincing customers that they should have their cars serviced there vs elsewhere when in reality, the same or better service can be had elsewhere for less money. Why do you think Mercedes can charge $700 for an oil change? Because they have convinced their customers thats what the car "needs" and "deserves".

In fact, they had to pass laws to stop dealership owners like you from making untrue claims of warranties being voided if they fail to use dealerships for service. So, you should get off your high horse.

When I take my Lexus to a Lexus dealer, my expectation is they will use Lexus oil and fluids and parts. If I wanted no name oil or fluids or parts I would take it to a gas station or a quick lube and pay less. THATS my point.

I like the best stuff. I enjoy doing research and finding the best stuff, whether its food ingredients, oil, tires, whatever. As a car enthusiast, my focus on finding the best stuff is amplified when it comes to cars. So, whether there is a quantifiable benefit to using a certain oil or not, I enjoy researching the benefits and finding what I feel is the best product. At the end of the day, its my car, my choice, and I have lots of money so what do I care what it costs? If you are so arrogant as a dealership or shop owner that you wont use what I want you to use, I will take my valuable business to someone that will. Your loss.

I've never had a dealership or shop refuse to use my oil, so its really not an issue.

Valvoline and Toyoyta dealer on and off. A good independent mechanic costs the same as Toyota. Unlike valvoline , Toyoyta will check your car for other age related issues.

It is somewhat a shame you are brainwashed on this subject but then again many amateurs are.

On 7/22/17 thedrive.com, a well respected automotive news organization, printed an interesting article on this subject. They spoke of a study conducted by Blackstone Labs, also respected in the industry. The heading reads as follows:

10,000+ Sample Study on motor oil supports what Consumer Reports concluded a decade ago. As long as the oil weight and certifications match what your car needs, there is no point in paying extra for a brand name.

This article can be readily found on the internet along with a number of other independent sources stating basically the same thing. This is exactly the same as I have been told personally by a number of petroleum engineers from a variety of different oil companies.

Of course these findings by actual accredited sources would not compare to your absurd ramblings about those terrible car dealers and your own research. The opinion of an anonymous independent mechanic who once worked for a Lexus dealer is far more credible than Blackstone Labs!

Not brainwashed, and not an ameteur. I actually have done a lot of research into this subject.

You keep saying that we are saying the bulk off brand oil is bad. We are not saying that. My mechanic was not saying that either (he doesn’t use TGMO either) We are just saying that’s not what we want used.

Like I said, I make an extremely good living and I just don’t care what a quart of oil costs. Couldn’t possibly care less. You care about what you care about and I’ll care about what I care about.

They sell TGMO in the parts department but they do NOT use it in the shop, they use a cheaper no brand generic oil for oil changes unless the customer insists on TGMO.

So all of those customers, one of which was me, assuming that their Toyota and Lexus dealers are using the OEM oil when they change their oil are incorrect. I think dealers should ALWAYS use genuine OEM fluids and parts, including oil.
So Toyota Genuine Motor Oil uses a special additive package. Are you suggesting that some Toyota dealers are using oil without this additive package in it? (because they are using no name bulk)

Yes, thats correct. If you look at the additive package in TGMO it has a lot of moly in it and other wear reducing agents that you don't typically see in oil. For instance Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP are really different despite all being manufactured by Mobil. A lot of japanese carmakers specify high moly content in their oil, Mazda's factory fill is the same way, as is Nissan, they use an Idemitsu oil. Thats actually what my mechanic uses because its high in moly but is cheaper bulk than TGMO.

To me, if Toyota engineers saw fit to add this additive package to their oil chemistry, I'd like to use that additive package throughout the car's life. My assumption was by having the oil changed at a Lexus dealer that OEM oil would be used, and that assumption was wrong. They WILL use it, but you have to request it.

Nice thing about BMWs is they still have free oil changes for the first four years.

For sure, but if I was going to keep one long term I would change the oil more often than they want to change it for free.

Trust me, if you're going to keep one long term, oil changes are going to be the least of your problems, lol. At the very least you'll always carry a few quarts in the trunk.

Ironically enough, neither of my BMWs has burned a drop of oil in their combined 280,000 miles--and I do the changes based solely on the OBC, which is ~13k interval for the Diesel, and 17-18k interval for the prior gasser. My 3-year old Audi burns at least two quarts per oil change, and that is considered totally normal.

Depends on the BMW engine. Their V8s have a lot of problems associated with mileage, I6s are much better.

For instance on Bimmerpost in the 7, 5, X5 X7 forums people recommend the I6 over the V8 to anybody really who doesn't lease
