Can someone highlight exactly what "chip" is I short supply? I work.in the semiconductor industry and we have already diversified out supply chain to mitigate covid 19 and other shortages last year. Curious what the car mfg are short on?
don't know specifically but i read somewhere it was really old model/process chips (like 55nm or something). As the video shows, when car demand plummeted and car makers slashed orders, chip makers moved onto other things (like not ancient chips). Then demand for cars picked right back up, but it was too late for car makers to say "oops, we still want those millions of chips we canceled". As you know, making chips is very complex and time-consuming to setup, so changing directions just can't happen quickly, let alone increasing capacity.
with IoT and a pandemic, the global demand for chips has exploded. Car makers likely aren't even close to the biggest customers, with thermostats, doorbells, 'smart' speakers, phones, tablets, computers, appliances, lighting, toys, and on and on...
