> Mazda confirmed that the next-generation CX-5 crossover would get this platform with a six-cylinder engine, but Mazda told Car and Driver that's not the case. We think that the new six-cylinder–powered crossover will instead be a new model called the CX-50.
> "The recent disclosure of the Mazda CX-5’s future platform and powertrain coming from Australia is not correct," Mazda said in a statement provided to C/D. The Japanese automaker told us that it is not yet ready to confirm which future vehicles will use its all-new large platform, but we expect the first models to be SUVs. Mazda filed trademarks for the names CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 in the U.S., which could refer to these new inline-six–powered SUVs.
Interesting miscommunication amongst Mazda employees themselves haha. Whatever it be, there does seem to be the new longitudinal architecture coming, just not on the CX-5. CX-5 will likely be final but not quite push towards Mazda's premium image, whereas CX-50 will likely follow up with the new premium platform afterwards. Can't wait to see what Mazda debuts.
A facelift usually consists of updated design, such as headlights, taillights, bumpers and grilles, and these are applied to all trim levels. So yes this is a facelift

Yeah but I just don't see any of that, other than the grill and the wheels. And the current CX-5 has a different grill and wheels depending on trim level.

This picture has a new grille, headlights, taillights, front bumper.
Ignoring opinionated criticism, I'll objectively state that this has NOTHING to do with the upcoming midsized crossover due next year. Mazda is making a habit of refreshing existing crossovers, as their replacements are brought to market. The smaller CX-3 revealed in late 2014 and launched stateside in September 2015 as a 2016 model, was updated traditionally mid-cycle in June 2018 as a 2019 model. The next model year, it got another update for 2020MY to downgrade to base Sport-only trim and phase it out in favor of more larger and more upmarket 2020 CX-30, which was launched in late 2019 (January 2020 in N Amer)
2019 Mazda CX-3 (March 28, 2018, NYIAS) CX-3 Sport (Base Model) for 2020-21MY 2020 Mazda CX-30
Whether or not Mazda intends to offer this version here is yet to be seen, as the 2022MY CX-5 begins production in November, for January 2022 launch. For developing or price-conscious markets, often regurgitated product is favored instead of offering a pricier new model.
The CX-5 currently sold stateside, will probably end production by 2024. Its upscale replacement is still coming for MY 2023.
The Japanese brands do small, FWD based stuff better than anyone else. I think it will do very well for Mazda. I personally don’t like the Mazda theme or direction the last number of years..,so hopefully it will feel less alive…and be more Zoom Zoom!
