Saw that the other day. Great big pile of stupid. The video I saw was actually from the other side of the truck, and from about 10 seconds in you could clearly hear something was wrong. The driver heard it too, because he backed off...then got right back on it.

Then there's the fact that he had a passenger, which is a major no-no from a safety perspective for exactly this reason.

Every time I see something in the auto world that takes the cake, the cake keeps getting bigger.

That appears to be a pre-2007 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 cummins. That engine had no emissions controls and in this case has been very heavily modified.

A stock post-2007(and even moreso a post-2011) diesel pollutes FAR FAR less than this.

Looks like I was mistaken, this one is a 6.7 cummins, so it's a 2007.5 to 2009 truck, but it's been heavily modified with deleted emissions equipment, a triple turbo kit, and a crazy fuel system among other things. They had previously put down 2700 HP and got to 2920 at this dyno day. They were dialing it in to try for 3k when it blew. I can't imagine the pressure it takes to blow up a cummins engine like that.

I'm thinking that, at that pressure, it might not have been the engine itself that went up in flames, but simply too much pressure in the fuel system, causing a rupture and diesel fuel spraying out on the hot engine. You mentioned that the fuel system was modified....it might not have been modified safely. Diesels also usually run at lower RPM's (with lower redlines) than gas engines, so that 2900 on the diesel would be comparable to something much higher on an equivalent gas engine.
