Idiot + Autopilot = *CRASH*
Not much else to say.

A Tesla Model 3 driver filmed himself crashing on Autopilot and it serves as a good reminder that Tesla drivers need to keep their hands on the wheel on Autopilot at all times.
When using Autopilot, Tesla recommends that drivers always keep their hands on the wheel and stay attentive at all times.
A Model 3 driver going by Dougal Vlogs on YouTube was driving on Autopilot while filming from inside his car with a handheld camera.
While filming, he crashed his car, which he described in the video description:
“I Love Tesla, but yes my car crashed on Autopilot. I am okay for the most part and car is being repaired. Enjoy”
Here’s the video:
The bigger problem is that he was filming at the time and he wasn’t ready to take over. Maybe he would have had a chance to gain control of the car if his hands were on the wheel.
Fortunately, it looks like he wasn’t hurt.
If anything, it serves as a good reminder to stay vigilant and always be ready to take control when using Autopilot.
This is especially important in this holiday season when there’s a lot more traveling and the road conditions are often worse, especially in colder climates.
I am myself putting on a lot of Autopilot mileage on my Model 3 these days, but I always keep at least one hand on the wheel and I am very attentive to the driving environment and everything the Autopilot does.
I know that Autopilot is getting more impressive and some people want to film the progress, but we recommend using a camera mount for that.
Also, you should know the limits of the system. Driving 75 mph on Autopilot on what appears to be a two-lane road in less than ideal conditions is pushing it in my opinion.

Electrek’s Take
This is ridiculous. The guy was driving in the rain at 75 mph and he hydroplaned. You can’t blame Autopilot for that. The bigger problem is that he was filming at the time and he wasn’t ready to take over. Maybe he would have had a chance to gain control of the car if his hands were on the wheel.

The idiots are beta testing Tesla's software. Tesla has so many warnings on keeping your hands on the wheel. It's not like you can't see the warnings as they are pretty intrusive. It's the driver willfully ignoring it.
I don't understand Tesla's position on Autopilot. If they want you to keep your hands on the wheel they should require it. If they don't require it and the car crashes they should be liable.

I would be so embarrassed and would never post it as it just shows the world you are a complete moron and should not be on the road.
On bright spot, the Model 3 may look less hideous after the crash.

I agree. I think they are trying to sell it like the car drives itself, but you are required to keep your hands on the wheel. (wink wink) If they really want you to keep your hands on the wheel, they could require it for autopilot to work. Like the parents that leave their high school kids at home with an unlocked liquor cabinet, but tell them "don't you drink our liqour". They know what is going to happen.

While one cannot blame tesla completely, the way they advertise the autopilot system (and by extension some dealerships non-tesla) its basically setting up this false image that this thing is Level 4 autonomy.
Driver education is more important, but thats works that no one wants to do....

Such an advanced car should be aware of the road conditions and disallow autopilot.
It could be very, very simple for the vehicle to assess that. As easy as the car being aware the wipers are on and the indicated speed.

The guy in the video in the OP was doing 75 mph while saying that the rain was much heavier than it seems on the video. Autopilot or not--anyone going that fast on a 2-lane road in a downpour is a danger to us all.
The technology is great. It's the people that just can't be trusted with it.

And like I said, it would take 1970s technology for the car to "know that", yet it doesn't. Wipers on plus speed should automatically disable it. No big huge shortcut or something huge to engineer to lock it out.
Youtuber is a stupid idiot. I would never trust anything autonomous in rain like that...ever.
