Default Battery replacement

So I have a 2016 Toyota Corolla and over the weekend, my battery died since I left the cabin lights on. When AAA came to jump start the car, they ran some diagnostic that said the battery needed replacement.

I thought factory batteries that came with the car last 5 years? Is it different now?

5 years sounds about average, but that is not definitive. My first battery only lasted 4 years. Mom's new RX failed at 3 years due to a bad cell. It happens nbd

My 14 Corolla battery start to struggled once it hit 5 years, I could have boosted it and just left it for a while longer, but after not starting two times, I just replaced the battery by AAA. It was not a made in Japan battery one like the new Corolla Hatch.

Running it down to empty likely reversed one or more cells. So now if you charge the battery fully it may only go to 8.5 volts or so. When this happens, it's irreversible, and the battery must be replace.

Lifetime-warranty batteries (even with pro-rating), as far as I know, are clearly a thing of the past. The old Sears Die-Hard battery (and some of the old Exide batteries) once had a lifetime warranty. Over time, it was shrunk to 20 years, then 10, then 5, and I don't know what it is today, but I doubt if it has gotten any longer. And Sears itself, of course, has gone out of business.

Not only that, but more and more demand is being placed on today's batteries due to the constantly-increasing level of electronics on today's vehicles. In the 1950s, 6-volt batteries became 12-volt, and now there are plans to convert future ones to 24-volts. (I'm speaking of non-hybrid/EV batteries, of course......those designed for conventional ICEs).

With my mine, if I had made 5 or somewhat short trips, I was stranded. Happened twice over 6 months. This is what did it for me. And at 5 years, I was like why not.

How can it be that precise that the battery will last an exact amount of time. Should it last 4-5 years? Yes. Guarantee? No.

usually batteries are 3 year replacement warranty then years 4 and 5 are pro rated. This is why you never try to stretch a car battery's life, it will die and leave you stranded at the worst place and time. Heat kills batteries down in the south, after 3 years I start getting suspicious of a car battery and watch it closely

And up north, cold kills them so you really can't win unless you live in Hawaii

That said, the AGM battery I put in my 335d 3.5 years ago started the ornery old diesel like a champ this morning at 5F.
