It's hard to imagine just how crazy this was at the time. There was a widespread idea that Japan would never to be able to compete in the luxury market. But wow, was that wrong...

Go back another 20 years Toyota was widely mocked the experts said they could never compete with Ford and GM.

It would be interesting to know where the original 1990 Lexus dealers were. In Canada, all 22 dealers were combined Toyota/Lexus. The UK had 41 dual Lexus /Toyota locations.

We had 3 original dealers here in the DC area, Lexus of Rockville, Lexus of Silver Spring, and Lexus of Alexandria. Alexandria and Silver Spring are still operating out of the original dealer building, although Alexandria has moved service offsite to another location, and an all new Silver Spring dealer is being constructed. The original dealer building is still on the Rockville campus, they sell pre owned cars out of it now.
