I have owned the NX, the prior RX, have the current RX, and have driven the new RAV4 as I helped my colleague buy one. Although an older comparison, feel free to check this out.
- If Android Auto is a must, rule out the NX and RX and wait for a 2020 RAV4.
- If 4 cyl is a negative, well there goes the NX and RAV4. The 2LTurbo in the NX is fairly smooth with some idle roughness in colder temps/winter gas (common complaint, search the NX forum). The RAV4's 2.5 is as smooth though I couldn't tell you if the idle is a bit rough. However, it is a touch louder than the NX under harder acceleration - not bad, but the NX is better.
- Of course, the V6 in the RX is smooth and RX is notably best among the three in NVH and engine responsiveness.
- Size: don't assume the RX is bigger inside. The RAV4's rear seat is just a touch narrower but with as much in legroom/headroom if not a touch more than the RX. NX is a close second. Either three will fit rear facing car seats without issue but if you need to put three across, the RX is best giving you a couple more inches in width. As for cargo, the floor in the RX is a bit bigger than the NX's and RAV4, but again very close between RAV4's slightly boxier more upright cargo versus the RX's wider, but lower and longer/sloped cargo. NX is a bit smaller and it will be tighter to carry portable play pen, carriage, boxes, etc.
- Fuel economy: The NX is just slightly better than the RX (about 2 mpg) which is negated from the fact that you need premium. So consider them to be the same in cost which is on the pricey side (22-23MPG combined). RAV4 will be 25-30% or so better (or cheaper in fuel cost).
Overall, if you're looking to buy to keep for the long haul, I'd get a brand new RAV4 for the "newness", space, fuel economy, tech, (and style which I like). Sure, it won't have the cachet of a Lexus, but the little things that will nag you daily such as the higher fuel cost and visits to the gas station, less usable cargo space, etc, can eventually bug you. And ask the Toyota dealer on a possible upgrade to Android Auto or perhaps folks can confirm as I heard/read somewhere that the head units in the new models 2019+ will be able to get AA in the future.
Happy shopping!
