Default Car scan for service? How does it work?

Just bought an '11 IS250C from a friend. Took it to the Lexus dealer to get a maintenance notification reset. When I pulled into service, the hanging monitor at the front of the lane I was in displayed my friends name. How does it do that? Does it scan something on the car? Can't be the plates as they are brand new in my name. I need to update the info they have with my info. I also need to find out if the service plan is transferable or how much Lexus will charge for a new one.

I know some MB dealers in the Toronto area have RFID assigned to the car. So they know who you are as you enter the location. Very likely this is being used.

Passports as you walk though an airport, items you buy at Walmart, etc., are tracked and read as well. I always figure track away as long as you're not doing anything wrong. If you are, then make sure you invest in Reynolds...what OP described is not the data from the vehicle but rather what vehicle it is. BMW has all that info in the key. Back in 2006? I thought it was pretty advanced.

I'm late to the game, that is pretty cool tech. I remember reading Car & Driver in the early 90's when the LS400 first arrived, some of the features it came with was amazing.
