Toyota/Lexus cruise control always Off by default
I am a heavy user of Cruse Control. It is really annoying that I have to press the Cruise On button everytime I start the car. No other manufacturers do this. They are all a physical button setting which you can leave on indefinitely if so desired.
Why does Toyota/Lexus default to Off all the time? Is there a way to configure it to be on at startup?
I have a 08 Lexus GS350.

I think what he's talking about is the difference between CRUISE and SET.
With the older Toyota/Lexus cruise systems, CRUISE (the button on the end of the stalk) simply turns the electronics on and illuminates a green light, but does not actually, physically, take control of the car's speed. To do that, you must actually push down on the stalk itself, and the car will remain at (or very close to) the speed you set it. I think what he wants is the system to remain on, but not actually set to the car's speed, when the ignition goes off. Obviously, the system cannot regulate a car's speed while sitting still.

its an annoyance from design. Not a defect. I transitioned my cars from Honda to Lexus since last summer. All Toyota’s and Lexus that I see are like this. I am a heavy cruise control user, so it is quite annoying to me. Especially since I drive my GS at constant speed on the highway most of the time, cruise control works good for me. I achieve much better fuel economy using cruise control. I usually get +2-5 mpg with cruise control over using my foot. I am usually able to achieve manufacturers mpg claims, driving with the flow of traffic in the left lane without being a slow driver. With my Porsche on the other hand, I am usually in ‘fun mode’.

yes, it an annoyance. I go in my car, to drop my son at school, I go to set my cruise... ahh, press that button first. Touch brake, get back up to speed, set my cruise, vehicles slowing, cancel my cruise, set my cruise. Get to daycare, drop off. Get back in my car, jump on the highway, set my cruise... ahh, press that little button first. On my commute to work, I use my cruise to modulate my speed constantly. It’s just that first time, each time I get in the car, it requires me to press the button even before moving off. So, it’s almost like, I start my car, I press the button. It’s annoying. When I go from car to car, I have to reprogram what I do in my routine. In a multicar house, it’s annoying. I wish it stayed on. I wish I could find a mod or a selectable program option where I could code it to stay on or off with the button like how it is in other vehicles.
I really was looking if anyone knows if it is a code-able feature. Like my daytime running lights can be coded to be on or off. So if someone is familiar with the coding options they might know if they have seen it browsing around the options.
Or maybe someone knows of a hack that I can try.
I am not really fishing for moral support on an annoyance. A quick google search turned up nothing, so I assume that Toyota just does it that way, but I found the forum to be a place where people can provide new information not yet available on the internet.

I respect that you would like the behavior, even if I personally wouldn't use it that way. I wasn't aware any other vehicles handled that differently it's interesting.
I have a few Toy/Lex. I'm also the kind of person that reads the manuals. I don't recall seeing that as an option (personal program or dealer program). Doesn't mean it's not there, just don't recall ever seeing it.
I tend to only use the cruise on longer trips. The cruise on Toy/Lex cuts off around 25mph. That makes it impractical for much of my driving. Even on the highway there may be a rolling slowdown or a small town where speed drops for a moment before speeding up. Braking, braking, then boop, no more cruise.
I wonder if this would be equally as annoying to you as pushing the button every time you get in. I don't know if other mfg handle low speeds better.
fwiw: I wish it handled sub 25 better. I feel like it's almost a safety issue. If speeds drop below 25 momentarily, I have to be paying extra attention as the radar distance control also gets turned off (I think) and I'm worried it will turn off and let me coast into the car in front. Collision avoidance will likely kick in, but that's not something I want to gamble on. Obviously these aren't self driving and I'm paying attention anyways, just feels odd that it will disable itself without much ceremony to let me know.
