Quiet news from Lexus for 2019 models
According to Apple's CarPlay availability website... https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/
Here's the latest line up:
It's all models but the RX and GS. This means Lexus finally got their act together to checking off this "car must haves check box" in making the car more relevant to smartphone owners and integration with 3rd party apps available via CarPlay.
It was a short a while ago that there were only 2 model's listed here (just the UX and ES).

LOL!
Because kids, all of these cars run Generation 9 navigation. Only Gen10 navigation can support Apple CarPlay which the six models posted all utilize. The IS, GX, LX, RX will get the ability when they switch over the latest mapping system or get a full redesign of the vehicle including the infotainment. The RX btw is slated to be the first Lexus to get a whole new interface with better connectivity and usability. Also the RX and subsequently future models will be getting the touch screen back (as one method of entry), but we are still a few years away on that.

It's interesting to note that 'streaming' solutions via app may be the way forward in the cars of the future.
It used to be that XM was the only option other than AM/FM/(insert your own music). Call it the 'car version of verbal and audio cable' if you will. It took many years of integration and satellite positioning to get the XM radio technology in many dashes as possible and CarPlay & Android Auto gives drivers another choice. The widespread adoption of 4g and soon to be coming 5g will render moot any 'satellite' driven advances. Streaming is the future.
We've come along way...
8track < Cassettes < CD < MP3 < XM subscriptions < Smartphone sourced Mapping/Music/Subscriptions/Personal media library/3rd Party media apps (where XM becomes one of them).
KIA got on this early on and no surprises there. They are very tech savvy or would have no car sales business in South Korea otherwise.

As long as they use matte screens. The iDrive touchscreen on my 530e attracts fingerprints like no other. Causes me to use the clickwheel instead.
Also, this must mean the interior of the RX must be in for a drastic change, because the screen placement as it currently is, would be impossible to use as a touchscreen.

I was thinking the same thing. It must be a pretty drastic change.

Android and Apple are fighting to get their software into your car so that you can buy their phones. That's all it is.
I haven't done much testing with the softwares on newer cars but I just use the cd player and I do not talk or text when im driving. So that prevents me from getting caught in the crossfires of Apple and Google.
