I wouldn't bet on it. The 4Runner still has a significant footing.

U.S. sales thru September 4Runner 102,267 (+8% ) and RAV4 319,147 (+2%). The 4Runner isn't going anywhere.

Yes, no question about it...the RAV-4, sales-wise, has been an enormous success. Unlike a lot of other people, though, I'm still not impressed with the current version, though...too much cost-cutting in the materials.

....but not before seeing the 4Runner that the owner of the management-company for our condo association just bought...a nice dark gray Limited model. (He's a regular at the D.C. Auto Show, like me). He not only needs something reliable but, if necessary, will get him anywhere, in any weather.

Jill is right.....unlike a number of Toyota's crossover SUVs, the 4Runner still has a carved-from-granite feel.

as you know, all new vehicles are reliable to the point of almost zero chance of being stranded anywhere. And a subaru could do 99% as well as far as anywhere in any weather, and get a load better fuel economy besides and will have all modern safety features.

you mean it's heavy and inefficient.

even the 2019 will not offer any modern safety features like blind spot monitoring, lane assist, radar cruise, collision detection / braking, etc.

but yeah, people will continue to buy them because they're reliable, look macho/rugged, and come in 'nice colors'.

back to the new rav4, it's rugged/macho looks are clearly designed to grab the 4runner buyer if they want something less prehistoric.

I agree with you that I did not care for the 4Runner either, but it is Toyota's best selling vehicle. People just love it!

They will be making a new 4Runner.

It is the the current-generation RAV-4 that I don't care for, Jill, not the 4Runner......I think you misread my post. I have nothing but respect for 4Runners.

Maybe not everyone puts those at the top of their priority list.

you're quite right.

but since toyota has it even on basic corollas you'd think they'd offer it on a $40+k 4runner.

i don't have 'something against' any vehicle, and the 4runner is certainly a reliable, capable 'trucky' ute (a bit like the previous gen explorer i had), and obviously toyota knows what they're doing, and make money hand over fist on the 4runner because they haven't felt the need to upgrade or add much of anything. toyota is a modern (quality) version of old gm... it's all about the $/Y despite what akio toyoda says.

I am looking forward to seeing the new RAV4. I like the looks, so far.

My folks have a current gen (2013 Limited AWD). The current RAV4 often takes a beating on CL, but I am always quite impressed with it. My only real complaint is some 4 cylinder buzzing at low speeds. The interior is holding up well, with great seats, soft "pleather" on the dash, tons of room, etc. They don't really care that the center console and lower door panels are hard plastic. They just got back from a 4,000 mile road trip in it and remarked at how great it performed.

As for the 4Runner, I loved my 2007 (traded for a Tacoma). My manager has the current one, which I rode in recently. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the ride was. Pretty smooth, quiet, and comfortable. I forgot how great they were.

My folks picked up a new RAV4 yesterday. They traded in their 2013 RAV4 Limited for a 2019 Limited Hybrid.

I'm looking forward to checking it out this weekend. I know negotiations were tough as these things are selling like crazy. Not sure what kind of deal they ended up with.

Aside from being a hybrid model, it seems like they added a ton of features. Their new one has a panoramic sunroof, Apple CarPlay, wireless charging pad, panoramic camera view, parking sensors, radar cruise and the like, rear hatch foot sensor, etc. Gas mileage is listed as 41/39. Should be a huge improvement over the 24 mpg they averaged scooting around town in their 2013. I'm happy for them and excited to see it.

A couple of dealership images of the one they bought.
