Default Tesla Model Y crossover reveal date set

The biggest deal is that the smaller Model Y SUV would see an official unveiling on March 15, 2019, with production slated to begin in the first half of 2020. The news was accompanied by a new teaser image, depicting the shadowy vehicle's front three-quarter view.

Announcing an unveiling nearly a year from now with production 18mos from now is kinda desperate.

...and given Tesla's past record, will that actual unveiling be 2 years from now, with production and sales 4 years from now? Or it may not happen at all, since Tesla could be gone in a year's time.

Exactly... there's so much momentum from other car makers now against them, i just don't see how tesla will survive the onslaught.

Tesla unveils stuff to draw up hype and increase stock value. It doesn't make sense to be unveiling and want to produce all these vehicles when they can't even get their Model 3 production on-time yet.

I don't view it much differently from what Apple does with the iPhone. Timelines are shorter, but the long-term teaser concept is the same.

0-30 days for Apple is the time frame from when they've had a conference officially showing the product and then being able to order it or buy it in a store. I'm referring to how far in advance you start hearing of new iPhone models, see "leaked" photos, etc. That's what the potential Model Y in this thread is - a hint, or a leak of what's coming.

As many have said on here Tesla is not a car company- they're also an energy company. But I'd argue they're more than that - because they are a true brand. Brands evoke emotion and loyalty from their customers and often draw extreme criticism from those who don't like them. In sports think of the Patriots, the Cowboys, and the Yankees. Very few people are indifferent to a true brand.

In the car segment, I'd argue that Tesla is somewhat of a niche brand given their lowest price point for a Model 3 is realistically around $45k and that isolates a large chunk of consumers who can't afford a Tesla. I don't see how companies like GM or Ford will chip away from the type of consumer attracted to Tesla. Those companies evoke no emotion, no loyalty, and no excitement in 95% of their portfolio. So Tesla doesn't compete against them. Porsche, Audi, MB, etc. are a bit of a different story. But Musk may be what ultimately keeps Tesla from being compared to other electric vehicles. His vision for the future is enough to have people want to purchase his products to support where he's going.

Tesla is a Silicon Valley company. They act like one. Some people love it, others hate it. That's what brands do to us.

agree branding is powerful and helps tesla enormously, but product still matters. if other brands (and can't say mercedes and bmw are not powerful brands too and moving into electrics quickly!) end up providing better products with better support tesla will fade.
