Default GX or RX

Wife is asking for a Lexus SUV. She wants a smooth, comfortable, and safe vehicle. I will be the driver so I want the vehicle that is easy to drive smoothly (it's impossible to do that in my GS). I also want up-to-date safety techs. It will do a lot of short trips in the city. This will be a Canadian vehicle.
Please advise. Thanks in advance.

IMO, unless you or your wife are going to tow a relatively heavy trailer or go off-road, the clear choice is the RX. Since you live in FL and probably won't need AWD traction, the RX also gives you the option of FWD and slightly better gas mileage. It is also significantly less expensive than the GX. A word of caution, though.....I have not personally driven or reviewed the new 3-row version of the RX, but, from a number of observations in this forum, it is very cramped inside because the basic platform was not really reworked enough to add the third row. So, if you need to carry more than about 4-5 people, that's (maybe) another reason to consider the GX.

I agree. Especially since it will be a Canadian vehicle.

I would choose the GX over the RX. The GX will work better in the snow up in Canada with its full time 4WD and will generally be more rugged and solid in the long term.

The RX is better because its smaller and can do most of the trucking capabilities.

RX is actually larger in every dimension except for height, wheelbase is the exact same tho.

RX should win this particular usage 10 times out of 10. Unless you need to tow frequently, the RX is more comfortable, with better on road driving dynamics and responsiveness.

I have had GX's for over 10 years but I agree with what most people have already said, the RX is the clear choice based on your criteria.

Unless the OP intends on going offroad in the winter, the RX with AWD is good enough for Canadian winter driving (and AWD is standard on all Canadian-spec RXs). Even the RX FWD should be good enough for Canadian winter driving on city roads and major highways (but I understand wanting AWD for the added sense of safety and security).

RX, much less expensive, just as roomy, handles better, drives better, much more fuel efficient, not as ugly.

We have had Toyota body on frame vehicles for most of our lives. They are very good and very satisfying for what they are made for. For daily driving purposes, I would say they are mediocre as an GX is heavy and drinks lots of gas. Gas in Canada is pretty high and you need to put premium in that sucker. Depending on where you live but regular is now $1.60 in Vancouver. $1.35 right now in the Toronto area. I think premium gas is like a $1.55 in Toronto, that is like $6US I think. Also to keep in mind is that Lexus GX in Ontario qualifies for a $3000 green tax levy applied to the final purchase price.

I would go with the more sensible option of an RX. GX also has that stupid rear door.

Thanks for all feedback. It looks like the RX would win this matchup based on price and more modern platform. I am curious to see which one she would pick based on the perspective of a passenger.

I haven't been in the GX, but I suspect passengers would like the RX better. It's lower, making it probably easier to get in and out of, and has a really soft ride. The first loaner I had for service on my IS a year or so ago was an RX 350, which I decided to show off to the coworkers, one of whom remarked "You know, this is really damn smooth."
