. Honestly, they should offer AWD as an option on the ES and be done with it. Like waaay back in the late 80's, the Camry had AWD called the All-Trac so why can't it be done now?
All done on purpose. For example, if you want 4WD or AWD and decent size vehicle, you have to go for the RX350 which is I believe $14K more in Canada than an ES. All designed to make you get into the higher priced RX which is very likely the same cost to build and you don't get much more usable space.
Same thing for the Matrix AWD. Toyota forces you into a higher profit RAV4

Well that's true if there are no other options or you want to stay in the Toyota family. If you dont want an SUV, one might go to Subaru...
most ES owners don't even know if their cars are fwd or rwd, nor do they care. it is all just about price and value. with that in mind, most people won't consider ES and there are little incentives for dealerships / salesmen to even try pushing the GS when they can sell the ES without much talking
I concur most people just don't know or care. I can name 10 women right now that don't know if they are driving a rwd or fwd car.
