GM Crossover Sales Surge Driving Retail Share Higher

• In April, Chevrolet crossovers were up 27 percent on a retail basis; Buick’s were up 48 percent; GMC’s were up 20 percent; and Cadillac’s were up 46 percent.
• Year to date, Chevrolet crossovers were up 24 percent on a retail basis; Buick’s were up 34 percent; GMC’s were up 15 percent; and Cadillac’s were up 23 percent.

• GM’s total sales were down 6 percent. There was one fewer selling day in April year over year. Selling-day-adjusted sales are about 4 percentage points higher than reported sales.
• Retail sales were 191,911 units, down 4 percent. Selling-day-adjusted retail sales were essentially equal to a year ago.
• Fleet sales were 52,495 units, down 11 percent, or down 7 percent selling-day adjusted. Deliveries to daily rental companies were down 20 percent, as planned.
• GM’s fleet portfolio is well-balanced, with Commercial and Government deliveries higher than rental in the first four months of the year and Commercial and Government market share is up versus the industry. GM is on track to deliver its third consecutive year of year-over-year decline in rental volume and mix.
• GM’s incentive spending as a percentage of average transaction prices (ATP) was lower than domestic and many Asian competitors, which was the case throughout 2016.
• GM’s spending in April was 11.7 percent, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates, which was below the company’s first quarter average of 14.1 percent and March’s level of 13.6 percent.
• ATPs were approximately $35,000, up more than $600 per unit compared to the first quarter of 2017.
• As planned, GM’s inventories reflect strong sales, lower car production and strategic, launch-related growth in truck and crossover stocks.
• The company expects to end 2017 at essentially the same inventory levels as 2016 on a days’ supply basis, but with fewer cars and more trucks and crossovers in stock.

• Chevrolet crossover sales set a new April and calendar year to date record for both total and retail sales.
• Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 1,292 units during the month.
• Retail deliveries of the Trax, a vehicle that helped spark the rapid growth of the small crossover segment, were up 45 percent. It had its best April and calendar year to date sales on both a total and retail basis.
• Retail deliveries of the Equinox and Traverse were up 23 percent and 19 percent, respectively. The Traverse had its best April and calendar year to date sales ever on a retail basis.
• Cruze retail deliveries were up 24 percent and total deliveries were up 51 percent.

• Buick had its best April retail sales in 15 years and its best April total sales since 2005.
• The Encore, which helped ignite the boom in small crossovers, had its best month ever in April. Its total and retail sales have now been up year over year for eight consecutive months.
• Envision retail sales were 3,576 units for its best month since launch. Enclave retail deliveries rose 4 percent.

• Denali models had their best month ever. Close to one-third of all GMC deliveries were Denalis, including half of all Sierra HDs.
• The Acadia had its best April ever, with total deliveries up 45 percent and retail deliveries up 42 percent. The vehicle has gained a full point of retail segment share in 2017 driven by the all-new design launched last year.
• The Terrain was up 14 percent in total.

• Cadillac retail deliveries were up 7 percent.
• Year to date retail deliveries of the all-new XT5 crossover were 25 percent higher than the outgoing SRX.
• Calendar year to date, XT5 ATPs are up more than $3,300 year over year compared to the SRX.

American Honda Reports April Sales with Record for Honda Trucks

• CR-V posts fifth straight record month, up 26.6 percent for the year
• HR-V sets new April record, up 25.5 percent for the year
• Civic and Accord sales remain strong with retail customers
• Acura TLX sales jump 39.1 percent in April

TORRANCE, Calif. – American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported April sales of 138,386 Honda and Acura vehicles, a decrease of 7.0 percent from year-ago results. The Honda Division saw a decrease of 6.3 percent on sales of 124,254 vehicles, while Honda trucks were up year-over-year, posting a 1.2 percent gain on sales of 61,114 units. Acura Division sales of 14,132 cars and SUVs were up from last month and were led by the TLX sedan with a 39.1 percent jump in April versus year-ago results.

Honda
With strong truck sales and sustained, steady demand for cars continuing in April, Honda Division sales grew 1.2 percent for the first four months of 2017. The Honda CR-V and HR-V continued their record-setting ways, both posting record April sales, as the Ridgeline pickup also posted solid April results of 3,186 units, and Pilot continued to experience strong demand in the face of constrained supplies.Despite the market shift toward SUVs, Honda saw continued strong retail demand for cars, with Fit recording sales of 4,871 units, Accord posting sales of 26,938 units, and Civic again topping the 31,000 mark, with virtually all sales coming from individual, retail car buyers.

• Honda trucks had a best-ever April, gaining 1.2 percent on sales of 61,114 units
• CR-V led truck gains with an April record of 32,671 vehicles, up 13 percent
• HR-V set a new April record, rising 22.4 percent on sales of 8,527
• Ridgeline sales surpassed 3,100 units in April
• With another strong sales month of 31,211 units, Civic was easily the best-selling passenger car in America on a retail basis for the first four months of 2017
• Clarity Fuel Cell posted 34 sales for the month, pushing total deliveries to 126 units

"While there seems no end in sight to consumers' love affair with trucks and SUVs, we continue to keep a focus on passenger cars to maintain a balanced sales mix in the retail marketplace," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of the American Honda Automobile Division. "Our efforts to build more Honda light trucks at our plants in North America are paying dividends with sales records for both CR-V and HR-V."

Acura
Acura division sales of 14,132 units were led by TLX, which posted its best month since October 2015 on sales of 5,258 units, up 39.1 percent from last April, following a strong first-quarter marketing campaign. Next month TLX will receive an additional boost with the launch of the significantly redesigned 2018 model, with three distinct variants including a new V6-powered A-Spec model, adding aggressive new styling to the performance luxury sedan.

• TLX recorded its best-ever April and 2nd best month ever on sales of 5,258 units, up 39.1 percent over last year
• Acura light truck sales remained strong with MDX and RDX combining for sales of over 7,845 units, with the launch of the new 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid expected to boost sales in the months ahead.

• BMW brand sales decrease 9.3 percent
• MINI brand sales decrease 27.4 percent

• April 2017 sales of BMW Certified Pre-Owned were 12,757 vehicles, an increase of 13.1 percent from April 2016.
• Total BMW Pre-Owned sales for April were 20,608 vehicles, an increase of 8.2 percent from April 2016.
• Total BMW Pre-Owned cars sold year-to-date were 80,791, a 26.5 percent increase from the first four months of 2016.

• In April, MINI Certified Pre-Owned sold 1,055 vehicles, a decrease of 3.6 percent from April 2016.
• Total MINI Pre-Owned sales were 2,940 vehicles in April 2017, an increase of 15.9 percent from April 2016.
