I certainly wouldn't want to go back to having to take a key out to start the car lol.

And BTW, you can start the car with the battery in the key dead, you just have to hold the key up to the start button when you start the car. The manual is very informative

 

Yes, I had read that, Steve, but would like to not have to ever find out...... My comments were more in general across all the car lines and while I agree that Lexus did provide in their design a safe guard there are just too many stories out there.....

 

I've been driving cars with smart keys for 13 years and have never had to figure out how to start one with a dead smart key.

That failsafe is is not unique to Lexus. All companies have some sort of failsafe such as that, or exactly that.

Ive not heard any of these stories you're talking about lol. Modern cars warn you when the battery is low. Lexus makes replacing the battery a yearly part of maintenance. I got out of the Sedona the other day and it told me my smart key battery was low, so I changed it. It's simply not an issue unless you just never think about it. And if you don't think about it, you can start the car with a dead key.

All vehicle manufacturers build in safe guards. You just need to educate yourself on your vehicle.

In the case of the Tesla boy, Tesla specifically notes the app is not a replacement for the key and the key should be carried at all times and the car even alerted him his key was not found, while the car will drive being started via the app t told him he didn't have the key. Ignorance and stupidity on his part not Tesla.

i know 4 people with Tesla's I asked two about the app thing and this was what I was told and shown. The guy was an idiot.

 

Seems like overkill. My original FOB battery is now over 4 years old and still going strong! I really should replace it, though.

Keys will never be replaced in the near future, the tech to replace a physical key just doesnt exist yet since the liability concerns are never quite transferred from the mfg to the owner. So once the legal dep finds a way to avoid bad press but more importantly legal liability, the physical key plus remote plus accessory app/smartwatch nfc tag will persist.

 

um.. I've had my fob battery replaced at every 5K service. not by choice as part of the service, I noticed it on the invoice at the 10K so I marked my battery to see if they were actually doing it, and at the 15K and 20K they indeed did change the battery in the fob I gave them, so each visit I swap which fob they get, as I have 3.

 

Yep, they just do it as part of the service. I wouldn't do it that often myself.

Ford states their biometric system should be ready by 2020,
MBZ already has NFC smart phone replacement in the E-class,
Volvo pushed their smart phone replacement to 2018 models,
Tesla has already enabled their smart phone service, though it has issues.
Toyota is aiming for NFC/Bluetooth via smart phone like MBZ by 2020.

by 2025 (a mere 7 years) most vehicles will not have any sort of key or key fob IMO.

I'm already at that point in my life, I do not carry any keys for house, car, or office.

House is biometric, with a keypad or smart phone option.
Car is the Lexus Smart Card in my wallet, never have to pull it out, just walk up touch car, open get in, press start.
Office uses NFC off our phones for door access, no more security badges,

Hell with Apple pay and State Farm insurance app, I really have no reason to carry a wallet other than ID. I use a TrayVax money clip, have my ID, 2 debit cards, my AMEX, and my Lexus Smart Card in it, and my house key in the hide a pocket, the debit, credit, house key are for just in case, but I can honestly say in the last 18 months I have never pulled them out. I use apple pay everywhere.

Keys are not going anywhere anytime soon.

If you purchase a new e Class, theyre still handing you keys.
If you purchase a Volvo waterproof remote key, you can only access select doors where you temporarily stow the original keys while at the beach
The NFC tags, the biometric signatures, etc etc are great. but the key is still the fail safe, is still the primarily way of doing things. All the additional items are accessories that exist to make life easier but not meant to completely replace said key since the liability issue still persists.

On a side note, the whole replace your keys for a smarter way of doing things reminds of the whole last decades trend of IoTing everything since life will become easier. Turns out great idea, terrible **** poor implementation leading to huge gaps in security. Lets hope this does not turn out to be the same
