Plus it's your proposal which is a BIG DEAL... you'd want to show up in your brand new IS and not some rental corolla. And to rent something "nicer" than the IS to drive 13 hours interstate is going to be eye-wateringly expensive... plus in the end, I'd much rather pick up my wife-to-be in my own luxury car that I worked for than someone else's.

So put the clear bra on and drive the hell out of it and enjoy it. Road trips are fun The F Sport model should be mildly more 'engaging' as well for the trip.

Awesome, what a good eye opening input, gonna have clear bra installed and hit the road in a couple weeks !
I'm just afraid of getting caught in snow like last year lol.

I do, and my advice was based on that tried and true experience. Especially to be considered if you would be driving at night. New roads, new traffic patterns, unknown # of potholes, washboards, etc.

Long drive:
1. Albuquerque to Philadelphia
2. Philadelphia to Dallas
3. Dallas to Toronto (Canada)
4. Philadelphia to Toronto (Canada)

Depends on how far I am going, if the trip is very far, I will rent a car and get unlimited mileage. The benefit of not putting miles on my personal car will outweight and be more beneficial than spending money on a rental.

If I were going cross country or to Florida, it makes very little sense to take your own car.

Except that I get to drive my car that I bought to drive places on that trip.

I would much rather be in my own car, that I am familiar with, on a long trip. I can understand people who lease their cars wanting to watch the mileage, but a few thousand miles on a long trip for a modern automobile is just not that big of a deal.

Which is fine if that is what you want to do, I just think it makes very little sense.

What makes little sense is leaving your vehicle that you spent $50,60,80k on at home and driving a rental car that isn't as good a car on a trip.

If you aren't going to drive it, why spend that kind of money on a car?

I guess we have differing sensibilities, because I say the exact same thing about your theory. Different strokes for different folks.

Yeah--unless your car is a '64 GTO, I just don't get why you let it sit at home and take a rental on vacation. Not every decision in life should be based on how many pennies you might save.

Amtrak has a nifty solution for going to Florida from the D.C. area.......your car rides along on the train with you, then you have it when you get to your destination for whatever you need it for. It then rides back to D.C. with you. Too bad this idea hasn't taken hold elsewhere.

Why? My new Ram has 30,000 miles. I bought it new with less than a mile on it in late april of this year.

Mileage only equates to mileage. It does not cost that much on a trade to have a higher mileage vehicle, it doesnt make much of a difference in resale either. As an example, my truck is worth (blue book) of 46550 right now. if you cut my mileage in half (to 15k miles), its worth 47,000. I got WAY more smiles out of that $350 than money can buy, so to me its money well spent.

I have been buying and selling cars for years. mileage just doesn't matter unless its stupid high (like 2 years old and 200k miles).

^~8500 miles.
I have also done the Anchorage to Dallas-Fort Worth and the Anchorage to Key West drive...twice in the last decade. My more frequent road trips include:

Dalllas to Las Vegas
Dallas to Phoenix
Dallas to Salt Lake City
Dallas to Seattle
Dallas to Destin, FL (favorite vacation spot)
Dallas to Los Angeles
Dallas to Indianapolis
Dallas to Charleston WV
Dallas to Denver

...yeah...I love road trips LOL.

Personally, I buy cars that I like to drive and that have the features, amenities and comfort that I want. With that in mind, I prefer to take them on trips vs. renting something.

I guess if one wants to rent a car when they take a trip, it might make sense to have just a small, basic fuel efficient car for local driving, knowing they're going to rent something when they hit the road..
