Don't know many of the details yet, but apparently Marry Barra, GM's new CEO, just fired the head of the internal GM investigation team into what happened with the defective ignition switches and why. I just hope, not only for her sake but of the corporation as well, that she did it for credible reasons and is not just trying to hide something. So far, I've liked her leadership (and her immediate predecessor, who was also a breath of fresh air)....or at least a lot better then that long string of bad management the corporation was saddled with for decades, with Roger Smith being (arguably) the worst.

GM has done that with several models. Buick's Verano and Regal, for instance, are virtually identical inside to the left-hand drive versions of their European Opel Astra/Insignia counterparts (the British Vauxhall versions are, of course, right-hand drive). We also saw it in the past with Pontiac's GTO and G8 vs. their Australian Holden counterparts.

Oddly enough the SS and Genesis V-8 R-spec are price for price pretty even with 420hp (the new V-8 Genesis climbed into the 55k range). Both have interiors that are fine but clearly not going to blow people away. If you want that, you are going to have to pay double!
I'm just bothered by the fact that it could be "nice" instead of "almost nice" if they'd just left it alone.

I'm not sure I understand your post. Basically, except four some minor trim and logos (and, of course, the necessary conversion to left-hand drive), GM DID leave it alone compared to the Holden version.

Both of them, of course, also offer AWD...but differing types of AWD.

I see a ton of XTS's around Miami.
South Florida has a lot of retired people. Some of them probably had previous DTS/DeVille models and traded them in on a new XTS...perhaps without really knowing just what they were getting under the car's skin. Unlike the DTS, the XTS has glitzy trim and a nice rich interior that can impress, if one just looks at the surface. But apart from that, and underneath, IMO, by luxury-car standards, it rides and drives like an econobox. The XTS does have a more modern, more flexible drivetrain (including the AWD option) than the old Northstar/4AT combination in the DTS, but, the way most DTS owners drove, it probably doesn't make much difference.

Yes......definitely thanks for the update. This is very important news. I'll add it to the recent SS review I myself did.
