Nissan is a weird company, some of the best cars ever made, and some cars, well "not so much"
my 30 year old 300ZX seems to have LS400 levels of toughness and durability and reliability - and the small trucks and GT-R's and many others are legendary engineering.
like the 2.5 motor that were dropping screws into the intake and ruining motors?
In Nissan's defense, every car make (even Toyota & Lexus) have at least one engine or car model in their history that has had some nightmare issue.
on Lexus LS for example, the 2007-2008 models had a major valve train failure, which was huge for this formerly near flawless reliability model, it was about the last make & model with pristine reliability.
Im fully aware..valve springs.toyotas have had several engines that were less than stellar..but nissan has never put out one to match the 4.0 or 22re..or the 2.2 engines in the camry
To be honest the Q45 appealed to me more as a kid, I liked the fact it had no grill, seemed very aero. I liked the sweeping dash, I liked the overall styling. I never was old enough to drive one at the time but to me it seemed like a cool car. Then they slapped on a chrome grill since the car was selling poor and their focus groups now said it needed a grill. As stated in reviews it was always faster and more fun than the LS but the LS just decimated it in reality, wasn't even close. I much preferred the GS 300 when it debuted to either the Q or LS.
If I recall in the "Lexus Story" the chief engineer somehow got someone at the Infiniti stand to open the hood of the Q45 at its debut and he knew instantly they had won. Thats something crazy but held true.
Infiniit has never recovered from the Q45's flop of a launch. 25 years later they still struggle.

Oh not true at all, I can think of a plethora of stellar Datsun/Nissan engines that were every bit as reliable and durable, if not more so, than the 22R, 22RE and other notable workhorse Toyota engines, such as these Nissan engines:
ok, let's not go off into a toyota/nissan engine history...
back to the q45, a friend had one years ago - bought it used for a 'good deal' and it left him stranded once then the active suspension broke for a couple of grand fix. he sold it after probably less than a year and bought a new bmw 540i 6 speed i then bought a gs400

So he sold one unreliable car for another unreliable car? In his defense, at least the 540 looks amazing....
Next door neighbor has what looks like a clean mid 90's Q45 sitting in the garage. He said it has an electrical problem. I used to like them, but they have not aged well at all. At least the early models haven't.
I really liked the Q45 when they first came out, it was one of my favorite sedan designs at the time. I was way too young to be in the market or even drive one but I sat in a q45 at a auto show before it was released. I was really impressed by the car but then again I was still in grade school and did not have a lot of experience sitting in luxury cars. I remember a lot of people trying to get in the car and admiring the features/interior and it seemed to have some buzz. I remember reading the V8 had the most power in class, it had around 280hp which was very impressive in the early 90's for a lux sedan V8, most competitor V8's were around 240-260hp at the time. I saw a few of them on the road and thought they looked great but then I saw that ridiculous ad campaign and could not believe they were not showing the car in the commercials.
I remember comedians and shows making fun of the ad campaign for the Q45, SNL had that Infiniti toilet commercial later on. The car and brand was doomed with such a horrible ad campaign, reviews were mostly pretty positive but Q45's were complicated and had some issues and they don't hold up well. I still like the look of them but the market obviously did not.
The second generation Q45 was pretty disappointing, they put a smaller engine in it with less power and performance and the interior was bland and cheapened, the exterior was bland and forgettable and it was no longer sporty. I think I saw 1 or 2 of them on the road.
The 3rd Gen they made a pretty big deal about, it was bigger and had a class leading 340hp with those gattling gun HID headlights. Unfortunately the last Q45 was so poorly geared it was no quicker then a 290hp LS, it may have been slower. The interior was unique but quality was pretty poor. Reliability was not very good and it was a gas guzzler. When I was in the market for my GS I test drove the last Q45 because a dealer had one for a really attractive price, I was not impressed, the interior materials were cheap and there was a lack of attention to detail, the 340hp felt really underpowered, it did not even feel like 300hp. The last gen sold poorly and it was cancelled.
