Most mechanics wear gloves of some kind today - but there used to be an old trick of rubbing olive oil or cold cream into your hands before tackling the dirty work. It would tend to displace dirt, grease, and grime not keeping you clean, but at least making cleanup a lot easier. Another old trick was to keep a few remnant bars of soap near your workbench and claw them enough to drive soap under your nails before getting into the grimy parts - again, making cleanup easier.

Avon still markets "Silicone Glove" a non-greasy hand cream that does an excellent job of keeping your hands clean on dirty jobs. It's cheap, good for your hands, and widely available. I keep a tube anywhere I might get into something I'd rather not have become a semi-permanent part of my hide; I use it even when painting.
Wife wanted to know why I kept one under the kitchen sink . . . told her I use it when cleaning and rebuilding carburetors. Now I don't recommend you say that - even in fun - unless you want the lecture about bringing all your filthy junk into HER clean kitchen.
Car guys know this too.
