I absolutely love this new C-class. This has the potential to really shake up the entry level class. However, with its "upmarket/mini S-class" aspirations, I also think the price will reflect that. I can see this easily crushing the 50K mark and nearing 60K with a bunch of options. Nothing about this car sounds cheap.
I remember years ago, 3 series with vinyl seats were awful

Current C-Class here is 180.4in in length. Reports I've seen say W205 is 3.7in longer than outgoing model. So marginally bigger than the 3IS
Current E class:
Overall length 192.1 in
Overall height 57.1 in
Overall width 81.5 in (with mirrors)
Wheelbase 113.2 in
Current C class:
Overall length 180.8 in
Overall height 56.3 in
Overall width 69.7 in
Wheelbase 108.7 in
Reports are saying the W205 has a three inch longer wheel base. Still a good ten inches shorter than the current E class, which is a big difference. Current E class only has 16cu inch of trunk space so not sure how the new C has 17...They should have increased the rear seat leg room instead

I like how Mercedes is staying true to what they are as a brand.
Unlike other car makers (ahem Lexus, Infiniti, Cadillac) they aren't trying to emulate the BMW 3 Series (or what it was back in the day). They are doing what Mercedes is all about since day 1.

I've never really understood the whole 60/40 bench seat thing in a sedan, I've never had a need for one. Of course, I've always had another vehicle to haul things in.
My issue with the GS sidewise is really the ability to carry 4 people in real comfort. The GS is great for two, but even with 3 or 4, the way my seat is positioned for my comfort the person behind me is a little cramped, and if my front passenger is of any height over say, 5'10 its the same issue. Its not an issue all that often, but in my business I do carry people from time to time, and I have opted to take the Jeep at times just because I was going to have 4 or certainly 5 people with me.
If the rear legroom were 2 inches longer it'd be fine I think.
Its a compromise. The GS is designed to be a great handling chassis...long wheelbases are contrary to that. The 5 Series and E Class have longer wheelbases and a little more room in the back, but handling suffers. The CTS is more cramped in the back than the GS, and look how well it handles.
As for the C Class feeling just as spacious, the current one certainly doesn't. One of my employees has one and it is a nice little car, but the emphasis is on little. Even in the front its tight compared to the GS. The new one isn't a whole lot bigger overall, I don't see it feeling as big as the GS.
If it feels as big as the GS it'll feel as big as the E...
