Just picked up a '11 ES350 from a friend

I don't plan on driving it much at all (maybe only on weekends), so I wanna get the cheapest auto insurance possible for it... just enough to get it registered in my state

Who should I use? Any suggestions for which company has the best prices?

 

it depends on person but a guarantee way to find a cheaper insurance company is to find one that replaces your car with aftermarket OEM pieces . this will save you money rather than companies that only buy from dealerships.

 

Do you owe a note on the car? If you own it free and clear, you don't have to have comprehensive or collision coverage on it. Granted if its wrecked and you're at fault, tree falls on it, etc, you're SOL on the 20k+ that I'm sure you paid for the car.

Seriously though, if you have a clean driving record and aren't like 19 or 20, insurance should be reasonable for that car anyways. Saving $20 a month and taking the minimum state coverage standards is a risky move. The amount that you are insured against at the minimum level is not adequate if the other driver ends up seriously injured or dead. You could wind up a protracted legal battle that could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars that would've been covered if you had decent insurnace.


All that being said, have you had the same insurance agent for a while?? Shop around, if you find somebody lower than their rate, show it to your agent, they'll usually match or beat the deal the other company is giving you if you are a good customer(ie low risk and pay on time).

 

When you insure it tell them 2500 or 5000 miles a year, that makes a big difference

When I was shopping for car insurance, the general consensus is that geico is the cheapest for auto insurance, progressive is the cheapest for alternate vehicle (motorcycle, atc, boat, etc) insurance. Even reps from other insurance companies says that geico is the best at auto. It really is dependent on your location and driving record that will determine how cheap it is. I have an IS250 awd and I pay 460 for full coverage every 6 months, but there are alot of supporting variables. I have no points, and my town is classified as a village instead of a town/city, i drive less than 3 miles from work to home on a regular basis etc.

 

My SC300 was insure by Progressive and it was pretty affordable. They also give up quotes from other companies as well.

 

There are many factors involved, and one size doesn't fit all. That said, for me, I've had State Farm forever. I have both our vehicles and house covered with them. My new ES costs me less than $500/yr for full coverage ($500 ded. collision, $0 ded. comprehensive, rental car, etc...). Over the years I've shopped around to see if anyone could do better. The worst, by far, was Geico. They wanted more than 2x what my current costs were. No one else came in better than 50% above. I'm sure a lot has to do with being a long time customer with no claims to speak of.

 

For auto insurance, my experience over the years is that, in general, GEICO is the cheapest....and offers a lot of discounts for qualified people. For active-duty and retired military, though, might also want to check USAA. They are set up to serve the military, and have an excelllent reputation.

Seems like everybody is recommending USAA, without realizing that only a small % of the country is also qualified for it.

anybody use 4autoinsurancequote.com ever? i always hear them advertising on the radio here for $40/month liability coverage. sounds too good to be true.

 

Keep in mind, like anything else, you get what you pay for. If you want inexpensive (cheap) insurance, don't count on a quality repair. Body shops don't repair cars, insurance companies do, and some do it better than others. Geico is cheap and their service is top notch but they will never, ever, pay to have a car repaired correctly the first time. Like Progressive, Geico, and other cheap policies, their only goal is to repair your car as cheaply and as quickly as humanly possible, not to pay for a proper repair.
Other companies, like USAA, (expensive) will literally give the repair facility a blank check and say "here, fix the car like it should be repaired".

 

I am with State Farm, and I have clean record. My 13 Lexus is 65$ a month with 0 deductible on comprehensive

 

Really not understanding why Geico is the cheapest for most of you, when it was by far the most expenxive option for me. Strange...

 

AAA is great insurance! Not the cheapest, but they do a great job when they are needed.
