Default Render: Toyota FT-1 R by Hansen Art

So far, Toyota has launched two real-life examples of the FT-1 Concept. The original is finished in a bright shade of red while a stunning Graphite Silver example debuted at Monterey Car Week 2014 alongside the virtual Vision Gran Turismo concept. Previous rumours indicated that those two latter cars would indeed come to fruition while also indicating that a real track-only variant could arrive.

While it remains to be seen, such a car could be created to compete in Japan’s Super GT500 series against cars like the RC-F GT500 and Honda NSX Concept racer. To give us an idea of how such a car could look, Hansen Art has created the following rendering.

Most notably, the car has been fitted with a massive carbon fibre rear spoiler as well as a set of racing wheels and slick Pirelli P Zero tyres. The car also features a large rear diffuser, side skirts and front splitter.

Overall, the Toyota FT-1 features the function-sculpting design language. This has resulted in a curved, muscular and expressive body the clearly seems to have been shaped to be as fluid and flowing as possible. Inlets, ducts, and vents are features of the exterior design that help reinforce its race–ready nature with elements of purposeful airflow management designed to keep the car at its optimum temperature. At higher speeds a retractable rear wing deploys and tilts generating yet more downforce and helping to keep the car planted.

The result of the radical design means that the FT-1 is not only a very dynamic shape but one that is a feast for the eyes, a real stunner that commands attention and further inspection. Alex Shen, Calty’s Studio Chief Designer echoed this when saying at the car’s launch, “Our team was heavily influenced by Toyota’s sports car past, especially Celica and Supra, and we sought to capture some of that history. It is an aggressive, track-focused sports car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe.”

Looks more like a GT3 version instead of GT500. Love the car, hate the beak.

Default Gran Turismo 6 Updated With New Cars, Tracks, and Modes

Update 1.12 now available to download on PS3.

Sony today released Update 1.12 for Gran Turismo 6, introducing new cars, tracks, and modes for the popular PlayStation 3 racing game.

First up is the new Toyota FT-1 Vision Gran Turismo concept car (above). You can unlock this vehicle by completely one lap (regardless of how long it takes you) in the new FT-1 Seasonal Event. Polyphony Digital community manager Eric Fishback writes on the PlayStation Blog about the car that, "The designer's original intention in designing the FT-1 was to unabashedly appeal to the die-hard car enthusiasts."

A second new car available in Gran Turismo 6 today is the Nissan GT-R NISMO edition, an updated version of the R35 GT-R, which was first released in 2007. Fishback writes, "This latest version has set the fastest volume production car record at the famous Nordschleife (North Course) on Germany’s Nurburgring with a time of 7:08.679 with its retuned suspension, updated turbochargers, and increased downforce."

The GT-R NISMO will be given as a free gift to all players who took part in the GT Academy online event earlier this year.

Also available now in Gran Turismo 6 is a new "quick match" mode for Gran Turismo 6's online component. Unlike the game's standard multiplayer mode, through quick match, you can partake in races with predetermined regulations. This, along with the fact that player matching will happen automatically, means races should start more quickly.

Another new addition to Gran Turismo 6 today through the 1.12 update is a new course called Sierra Time Rally at Circuito de la Sierra. Modeled after the Ronda region of Spain, this course will challenge you to complete a lap within the alotted time, with time extensions granted for passing through checkpoints across 12 different sections of the course. The Sierra Time Rally at Circuito de la Sierra is available to play in both offline single-player and online race modes.

Gran Turismo 6 was released for PS3 in December 2013. Although Polyphony president Kazunori Yamauchi was initially optimistic about launching Gran Turismo 7 for the PlayStation 4 as earlier as this year, he has since dialed back his comments. In June, Yamauchi confirmed that development on the game is underway, but said it would be unlikely for the game to ship on PS4 in 2014.

Default Indonesia Live – Toyota FT-1 concept with graphite exterior

Previews designs of future Toyota sportscars.

The Toyota FT-1 concept lavished in a graphite exterior and a tan leather interior with exposed metal surfaces is on view at the 2014 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS 2014).

Originally donning a bright red paint job at its world premiere in Detroit this year, the car was showcased at Pebble Beach (in August) with the updated livery.

While the color of the black leather interior of the Detroit show car was a “bold and masculine black that keeps the driver focused on the road”, the natural leather on the seat of the updated FT-1 is “supple with an all-natural grain, giving it an authentic appeal”, and to “bring in a more sophisticated feel and authenticity through color choice,” says Toyota.

Wendy Lee, studio chief designer at Calty Design Studio-

From color and trim standpoint in the FT-1, there was a laser-like focus on staying true to function. This project was very special, as the FT-1 stands apart in its performance-driven, authentic purpose.

Both the Toyota FT-1 Vision GT and FT-1 with Graphite exterior are drivable on the Gran Turismo 6 on PlayStation 3. You can get more info in the press release below the gallery.

What can Toyota do exactly these days? The Twins built with Subaru's help, the new Supra built with BMW's help. RC-F while being very competent, still can't best M4.

They're doing a lot more than Honda

But on a serious note, teaming up with another automaker saves on both cost and time.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if FT-1 shared a carbon fiber chassis with BMW. Reading comments off of FT1Club/FT86Club and SupraForums there are a lot of people that feel the IS/RC/GS chassis is just too heavy. In the end of the day I really don't care which way they go. I just hope the weight can be kept down.
