While that may be true Motoring never said Toyota official announced that FT-1 was approved for production.

What they did say was that an insider has leaked or hinted that development for FT-1 is under way.

The car is coming…better believe it…

Not even sure why people are surprised about the smaller FRS, this has been mentioned at least a year ago..

MotorAuthority.is reporting that Tetsuya Tada is heading the FT-1 project.

Toyota FT-1 Concept Will Spawn New Supra: Report

Toyota has made little secret of the fact it's keen for new mid-size sports car to fill the void left by the Supra’s exit from the market early last decade. And at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show last month, Toyota pulled the covers off its FT-1 concept, which looks very much like a Supra successor and is said to preview the future styling direction for the brand.

The Japanese automaker, however, is yet to say whether the FT-1 is in fact a preview of a new Supra, but according to a new report that’s exactly what it is. Australia’s Motoring is reporting that a source at Toyota confirmed the FT-1 as being the next Supra, albeit a conceptualized version of it (meaning any production version will likely be watered down). The source is also reported to have reaffirmed plans for a third Toyota sports car, one positioned below the GT 86/Scion FR-S.

Getting back to the new Supra, the source is reported to have said that two versions are planned: an entry-level model powered by Toyota’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder debuting in the upcoming Lexus NX crossover, and a range-topping hybrid model combining a 2.5-liter V-6 with an electric drive system. The latter is said to develop in excess of 400 horsepower.

Other claimed details are a rear-wheel-drive, rear transaxle layout and a launch date of 2016. What wasn’t mentioned was whether the new Supra would ride on the sports car platform being developed with BMW, though it’s certainly possible.

As for the entry-level sports car, this model is said to arrive a year later, in 2017. It’s also said to come with a hybrid drivetrain, pairing a 1.5-liter engine with an electric drive system.

Oh, and responsible for the new sports cars is said to be none other than Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer of the GT 86/FR-S.

lol, the source is fake motoring article... it is not that i am doubting these "connections" that anyone can make about FT-1, but they are still fake with no real source at all.

All I have to say is that Peter Lyon was right about both the FT-1 and LF-LC.

In 2010 he wrote that a V8 hybrid LC was in the works to replace the SC430.

About a year later Lexus unveiled the LF-LC concept.

Again in 2011 he wrote about a new Supra concept taking styling cues from FT-HS. He was wrong about the hybrid part, but still half correct.

Just a few weeks ago Toyota unveiled the FT-1 concept.

The new design is just so perfect in many ways.. I do hope the final production is as close to these images as possible.. It would be such a win for Toyota...

I believe that is the Toyota 86 (AKA Scion FR-S).

Thank you too everyone that wrote on Toyota UK's blog. The comment section has doubled since the link was posted on ClubLexus!

Remember, concept cars have a greater chance of production with support from people like you. Also if you did not express and voice your opinions on what you would like to see the FT-1 become, than you can not complain about the final product.

Kinda like those who whined about Obama or The Congress, but did not brother to vote in 2012.

Again, thank you to those that wrote in. And if you have not, please do so.

I personally would love to see Toyota go back to their roots of turbo motors. Whether it be V8 or V6... just back to turbo and massive amounts of power potential
