The simple problem with texting is the law. It's weak. Very weak. Until the fines and punishment grow, people won't be fazed.
Doubt heavy fines and punishment would do anything. You have drunk driving as a prime example that shows harsh punishment is not a deterrent. Execute them, at least that way you pluck the hairs off the proverbial unibrow one at a time.
Florida has no texting in the car now...but you can't be pulled over for texting...if you get pulled over for speeding and you are found texting they can write you a ticket. I think they call it a secondary offense or something...
I think its a good idea but its still not going to work. People are still going to text and drive just like how people drink and drive. I mean do NY really think people are going to pull over at a designated area to text? I mean hell if that's they case people should just pull over on the shoulder to send a text. Im not going to lie I txt and drive and know everybody else does as well. I know its not the right thing to do and ive been trying to not txt and drive as much. Kudos to NY for trying this but I don't think its going to work and that's just more money wasted that could be used for something else. I think txting while driving should sure the same penalties as drinking and driving.

More and more states, though, are making it a primary offense. My own state of VA just did, and I think DC and MD next door also have.

At least, though, even with a few moments of weakness and giving in to temptation, you KNOW that texting while driving is wrong and have the common sense to see the potential danger in it....and are trying to do the right thing by giving it up. That is the first step in the needed life-style changes to make a real difference. Too many people, though, DON'T feel like you do. Their basic attitude to the law is.................."F*** it, nobody's going to impede on MY freedoms....I'll text and drive anytime I want."
yes txtng and driving will continue until they make autopilot cars. but if you look at the statistics only 1/10 txtrs crash while driving!
That's STILL a lot of drivers.
I miss the old days with the wired telephones in the cars
Back then, there was a lot less traffic on the road, which meant less chances of a crash. Of course, that didn't encessarily encourage using pre-wired phones while driving......many cars had them in the back seat, where they would be used while someone else up front (maybe a chauffeur)? was driving.

lol no the limos had it in the back, all the flagship high end cars had it up front but it was very clear and you could put it on speaker, no txtn back then

Well, I'll agree the voice was somewhat clearer.....today's Bluetooth leaves a lot to be desired. I can tell when my brother, for example, is using his regular cell phone and when he's in the car using Bluetooth (though he usually, for safety's sake, doesn't talk much when the car is in motion). But the Bluetooth voice is noticeably less clear and more garbled.

yes it almost seems technology is moving backwards, i dont use bluetooth, wired is the way to go.
