2014 GMC Sierra 4.3L V6 to offer segment-best 305 LB-FT
General Motors has released more information on the 4.3-liter V6 available in the 2014 GMC Sierra. The engine will serve up 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, with a six-speed automatic transmission, and giving the V6 Sierra a maximum tow rating of 7,200 pounds in regular cab, short bed four-wheel drive configuration. GM claims that figure is 500 pounds more than the equivalent Ford F-150 equipped with a 3.7-liter V6, and 700 pounds more than the Ram 1500 with its 3.6-liter V6. Buyers can expect to see the 2014 GMC Sierra with the 4.3-liter engine start at $25,085 including destination.
While the engine does deliver more torque than either of its main competitors, it falls short on the horsepower front. The 3.7-liter V6 in the F-150 develops 302 hp while the 3.6-liter V6 in the Ram 1500 yields 305 hp. GM says fuel economy estimates for its newest entry will land later this year

You can spout off numbers and stats all you want on engine output, but on something like these three similarly powered v6 engines, the proof is in testing each truck and towing with each to see what really works better IMO.
Also, the numbers, 285hp/305 lb-ft torque is VERY close to what GM was getting with the 5.3 v8 about 10 years ago(285hp, 335lb-ft torque from your basic 5.3 v8). Its still using the same basic OHV, cam in block, 2 valves per cylinder GM has been using forever, no DOCH cam tech like Dodge and Ford.
It'll be interesting to see if it actually has a decent torque curve, I've heard several people complain about the 3.6 Pentastar V6 in the Ram being low on torque and really needing to be revved to get it going(what you don't want in a truck motor)

Lexus Test Driver
I'm not into modern trucks or the hp number wars, but what today's V6 units put out sounds impressive. I once had a 1992 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.7 V8. It put out 210 hp and 300 torque. That was the fastest vehicle I've ever owned. I can only imagine what these new truck V6's must feel like, let alone the V8's.

OHV (pushrod) engines have favorable torque output throughout their rev range. This allows for taller gearing which improves fuel mileage. Despite their (typically) higher displacement, they consume a smaller amount of space in the engine bay since the engine doesn't have four separate camshafts (versus a DOHC "V" configuration).

Well didn't read any besides the Dodge vagina...still not sure if serious but are you really comparing a cheap base V6 from a $25k work truck to a set of twin turbo V8s found in $60-$100k luxury sedans and coupes? Keep in mind GMs answer to the competitions V8s include the very lightweight and compact 6.2 V8 debuting in the C7 Corvette with over 450 hp not to mention the new twin turbo 3.6 V6 going into the new CTS with 420 hp and 430 lb-ft.
Also if the fuel economy can match that of the Ram 3.6 with 8-speed at 25 mpg hwy then Chevy will have a real winner on its hands.
