And we're talking about a $17k sedan here...
Not all necessarily true. I'm not talking about Honda/Nissan etc. but look at BMW and MB their fitment of wheels is pretty much the same as what their concept cars have. But yea it's only a Corolla, so who cares

2014 Toyota Corolla details leaked

Toyota will launch the 2014 Corolla later this year, and thanks to the ever-leaky internet, a couple of key details about the new sedan have been revealed. Car and Driver was able to uncover these bits of information thanks to someone at a Toyota dealer in Kansas who has seen the car, as well as its order guide, though the dealer's site has since removed its original posting.

We got our first glimpse at the next-generation Corolla's design at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, where Toyota unveiled the Furia concept, pictured above. Yes, it looks all sporty and aggressive, but fear not, appliance shoppers, C/D says that the production car should have a couple of Furia bits mixed in with a huge helping of Camry-inspired styling.

The 2014 Corolla will reportedly continue to use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, though the mill has been massaged a bit, adding Toyota's Valvematic continuously variable valve timing. A four-speed automatic (yep!) will be offered in the base model, though the manual transmission now has six gears, and higher trim levels can be had with a CVT. Both engine output and fuel economy numbers should improve slightly over the 2013 model. Currently, the Corolla produces 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque, and achieves 27/34 miles per gallon (city/highway) with the five-speed manual 'box.

Trim levels will now be called base, LE, S and Eco, and a couple of improvements have been made to the materials and equipment offered inside the cabin. Softex leather will be available for 2014, as will a push-button start and a navigation system.

Toyota has not confirmed any of this information, but we won't have to wait too much longer before getting the official details on the fully freshened Corolla.
A 4 spd automatic in 2014. If that turns out to be true, Toyota should be absolutely ashamed.

The 4 speed is for the base and will keep cost down. In many markets, low cost is key, and consumers won't care.

POINT #1: It's all rumors. Unconfirmed speculation.

POINT #2: In Europe and Asia, where the Corolla sells by the masses, it's appropriate. Won't cost Toyota to extend the offering to the U.S, allthewhile having a bargain-basement starting price.

It's like power windows and door locks: sure, they're great, but not necessarily a must for econoboxes.

That's because it's still based on the present chassis and 1.8L 1ZZ mill. It looks like Toyco is going to keep the price down, massage the 1ZZ to include VVT and that's it in terms of the powertrain. Hugely disappointing if this is true.

European Toyota's only have 6 speeds for years now :-).

But it is basically low cost offering, with upper ones having CVT.

this is not true at all... 1ZZ isnt used in Corolla since 2009. And 1ZZ has used VVTi forever.

It is new ZR series dual vvti... and apparently it is getting Valvematic as well, which means better power and fuel consumption at the same time.

You're right, my bad. But the Matrix is still based on the ZR as well...

Valvematic is nice... 1.8l ZR with Valvematic in Europe makes 147hp...

Its effects are similar to direct injection - it gets around 10% better mpg and hp at the same time.

Agreed. If it does have a 4 speed that is ridiculous this day and age.

Base models or not, a 4 speed auto when most of the competition offers 6-speeds is simply unacceptable. Cost savings? Come on, last time I checked, Toyota was making decent money.

When Toyota introduced the new Yaris with the same old 4 speed, that was bad enough. Now the Corolla which will be sold through 2018 is a bit insulting to customers.

Really hope there is no 4-speed, regardless if it's on the stripper model. This car needs to seriously be a complete 180 from the current one.
