Infiniti just dumped a smaller displacement engine in the G37 body, so they ended up with a car close to what G37 sedan weighs but with 100 less hp and only marginally better fuel economy. i believe BMW will change the chassis of the 320 to make it more lighter and nimble compare to their big brothers.

No. They just drop some boost on the turbo. The 320i RWD is already sold in canada the dimensions are virtually identical, adn the engine internals are identical. Even teh curb weights are within 70kg.

Per this, everything about the engines are identical except for the pistons.

Just got A LOT more interested in this car now...

The compression ratios are different though, at least in canada.

Interesting yes. 11.0:1 on the 320i vs 10.0:1 on the 328i, upping the compression a bit in light of not boosting as much.

The only way to get that on the 320i is in the Premium Package which throws in a bunch of stuff that I'd just assume go without if the point was to save money. That's a standard feature on the 328i, unbundled from everything else. So the actual price difference between the two cars for me would only be a grand or two based on how I'd order them. Might as well just get the 328.
Totally agree, I did the same build online and it turned out to be over 38K.

In my opinion this is a very good move. The 320i offers plenty of power and great fuel economy while still retaining those BMW values such as driving pleasure and fun. It's no slouch.

Not everyone shopping for a luxury car cares about raw performance. This will be a great entry-level addition to the 3er range in North America.

Even better would be a 320d. I drive a 118d 5-door and I am more than happy with the performance (and the excellent fuel economy).

I just hope the car magazines know how to appreciate it. I can already see BMW and Driver, whoops, Car and Driver, giving it a poor review simply because it doesn't have an inline-6...

The 320i is not that good a deal. When reasonably equipped, it's priced almost the same as an ATS 2.0. The latter would be my choice. ALternatively, Volvo Canada is discounting the the s60 T5 aggressively, and most people here would be fine with FWD, vs AWD in a 320i.

Over here it is leasing for $320/month, based on a 48month lease with about ~$6k down. They advertise the s4it out of it on the morning and afternoon radio shows to catch the commuters with the tag line "get a 320 for 320" and then go on and on about the BMW experience and drive feel.

The 320 might pull new entrants from legions of Hyundai, Ford, and Chevy shoppers but won't cannibalize many sales for the 328/335 series.

I cross-shopped the 3-Series during my most recent venture and briefly contemplated the 320. While the full spectrum of exterior colors is offered, interior options are sparse with limited interior hues. Worse, the fuel economy is virtually identical yielding no purpose aside from aggressive price competition. I learned of the 320 just prior to a test drive; the salesman rolled his eyes and suggested corporate will lament this turkey. We'll see!
