The F10-generation BMW 5 Series arrived here in the United States for the 2011 model year, and the only substantial update thus far has been the addition of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to the base 528i model for 2012. But as we can now see in these latest spy shots, a small nip/tuck is on tap for BMW's midsize executive saloon, meaning slight tweaks to the front and rear fascias will be offered as part of the model's mid-cycle refresh.
As is the case with the vast majority of new BMW models, the updated 5 Series will use the more squared-off LED Angel Eyes seen on the 6 Series and 7 Series, with other elements of the sedan's front end being touched-up, as well. It's hard to tell exactly what lies under the swirly paper, but we expect more stylized headlamp clusters (like those seen on the 2013 7 Series) to make their way onto the Fiver. Additionally, the lower air intakes appear to be more pronounced and aggressive than the svelte design found on the current car. Out back, it looks like the taillamps are also receiving a slight makeover, though the overall shape isn't changing too much from what's offered right now.
Mum's the word on any powertrain enhancements for the refreshed 5 Series, but we don't expect BMW to stray from its current engine lineup here in the US. That means the 2.0-liter turbo-four will likely start things off at the low end, with the 3.0-liter turbo six and 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 rounding out the 535i and 550i models, respectively.
As for when the new 5 Series will debut, your guess is as good as ours, but since this is only a mild enhancement, we'd expect the changes to arrive sometime in 2013 for the 2014 model year.

Dang that was fast. Seems like the thing just came out.

I kind of think of the "new" 5 series like this. "Why would I spend 20-30k more on a 7 series?" They look the same, are almost the same size, same engines, same technology, same level of fit/finish on the inside. Yet I can't help but feel that both cars are rather "boring" to look at, and from the reviews drive worse than the previous cars.

The main problem with the F10 5 series has never been the way it LOOKS but in the way it DRIVES. It needs to lose 400 lbs and get rid of that turbo lag cause it was driving me up the wall after the near-electric instantaneous throttle response of the NA V6 GS350. How any BMW aficionado who's a real driving enthusiast could ever accept that in a 5 series I'll never understand.

I have to say that the F10 really grew on me styling wise, I don't care if it can be confused with other BMWs. The proportions are very luxurious and very sporty at the same time. It amazingly masks its size until you park it next to say an E39.
Dare I say I think it is the best looking car in class, in M sport trim! I think so!

bmw's priorities have obviously changed. but one they know is their customers. in europe, the 5 series is the aspirational company car. it says "on the right track" more than about any other car. 3 series there says "promising but not there yet"
we all know the 5 series is too heavy, partly because it's based on the 7 series platform most likely. reminds me of the the nissan 350z/370z for example, which i believe is based on a bigger sedan platform, and thus much heavier than it should be for its size.
but bmw has also quietly (pun intended) changed their sedans like the 5 series to be serenely quiet and refined. quite possibly in response to lexus! even driving a 'lowly' 520d in europe is very surprising - it's quiet and smooth! a diesel no less. oh and ENORMOUSLY popular there.
it's almost like the 5 series and the lexus gs have traded places.
