Not a bad first month for the FRS. How many do they plan on selling per year? I can see them doing about 20,000 per year for the next couple years.

Arrow Luxury Sales

DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- Mercedes-Benz' U.S. sales, fueled by a new sport-utility vehicle and compact coupe, rose 7.6 percent in June, furthering the German automaker's lead for the year over BMW.

The Daimler AG unit said it sold 22,231 cars and SUVs last month. BMW gained 0.4 percent to 21,725 compared with the same period last year, the company said in a statement, while Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus rose 86 percent to 20,022.

"This marks a historic milestone for Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. market," Steve Cannon, chief of Mercedes's U.S. unit, said in an e-mailed statement. "We achieved our highest half-year sales in our 47-year history."

After 6 months, Mercedes U.S. sales rose 16 percent to 128,595, to lead BMW by 2,091. BMW, which overtook Lexus last year to become the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S., sold 126,504 during the 1st half, an 11 percent gain. BMW beat Mercedes last year by 2,715 deliveries.

The results don't include Daimler's Sprinter vans and Smart cars and BMW's Mini brand, all of which aren't luxury vehicles.

Mercedes's introduction of a new M-Class SUV and new C-Class 2-door, along with an updated version of the sedan, all last year, have helped boost sales.

M-Class sales rose 45 percent to 20,626 through June while the C-Class, including both the coupe and sedan, gained 26 percent to 37,686. While sales of the M-Class were down in June, C-Class deliveries surged 41 percent for the month. The automaker may increase sales further later this year when it introduces a new version of the GL three-row SUV and an updated GLK compact SUV.

'Outperformed expectations'

"They certainly outperformed expectations," said Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst with TrueCar.com, a California-based Web site that tracks auto sales. "They were very, very aggressive with lease specials, especially C- and E- Class vehicles. It seems like it was a conscious effort to get the volume up in the 1st half."

Ludwig Willisch, head of BMW's U.S. unit, has predicted that the brand will again finish No. 1, aided by the new 3 Series. Sales of the compact car fell 26 percent in June to 6,740. The introduction of the all-wheel-drive version of the vehicle in the 3rd quarter may increase sales.

"The June numbers continue the solid, consistent growth we predicted but, most important, the 1st 6 months of the year are setting the stage for even better results ahead," Willisch said in a statement. "Demand is strong though we've been constrained by new model ramp up but supply will soon catch up in the second half of the year."

Lexus rises

BMW and Mercedes vaulted into the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, last year after Toyota struggled with parts and vehicle shortages following Japan's earthquake and tsunami and flooding in Asia.

After 6 months, Lexus sales gained 23 percent to 108,132, which is a slower pace than Toyota's 2012 target of a 25 percent increase and 250,000 vehicles sold. The brand may gain sales from the new ES sedan and RX crossover.

Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen AG's Audi brand are in competition for the world luxury-vehicle title. BMW is in the lead globally through May followed by Audi and Mercedes.

In the U.S., Audi's sales gained to 26 percent last month to 12,664, the company said in an e-mailed statement. Audi U.S. 1st-half sales rose 17 percent to 65,158, surpassing General Motors Co.'s Cadillac luxury brand by 2,346 deliveries.

Acura surges

Cadillac sales rose 12 percent to 12,124 in June while the brand slid 17 percent to 62,812 during the 1st half, the automaker said in a statement.

Both Audi and Cadillac were beat by Honda Motor Co.'s Acura brand. Sales of the company's luxury brand rose 77 percent to 15,370 last month and 20 percent to 72,936 percent during the first half, the company said in a statement.

Porsche sold 3,002 vehicles in the U.S. last month, an 18 percent increase, the company said in a statement.

Nissan Motor Co.'s Infiniti sold 10,436 vehicles last month, a 66 percent gain from a year earlier, the company reported.

Ford Motor Co. sold 7,544 Lincolns in June, a 2.5 percent gain from a year earlier, the company said.

Jaguar Land Rover deliveries rose 2 percent to 4,632, the U.K. brands, owned by Mumbai-based Tata Motors Ltd., said in an e-mail.

if I remember correctly, plan is 10k for 2011 for FR-S, up to 20k in full year for FR-S. Maybe 2.5x less for BRZ. I think that also assumes more models, because I dont think they will be able to sell that many without larger engine + convertible.

Some of these numbers are very deceiving. Take VW Golf R as an example, there were only 447 units sold last month and yet it is staying in the dealership for only 15 days, way below market average, that means VW didn't bring a lot here, to render an impression that it is a hot product, when in fact not that many customers are considering that model. Some of the other models are very popular because they just arrived as an all new, unprecedented model such as FR-S and BRZ. Now Prius C and CR-V are the real unalloyed hot sellers.

Lightbulb MarketShare

DETROIT -- U.S. light-vehicle sales, paced by Toyota and Honda, rose 22% in June as U.S. consumers continued to shake off economic jitters and replace aging cars and light trucks.

Automakers -- also helped by falling gasoline prices and new models -- sold 1.29 million cars and light vehicles last month. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate rebounded from May's 13.8 million to hit 14.1 million, well above forecasts.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. continued to rebound strongly from last year's earthquake with sales gains of 60% and 49%, respectively.

"We expect to see continued stability in the automotive market during the 2nd half of 2012 thanks to pent-up demand, low interest rates and a continued influx of new products," said Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota Motor Sales.

General Motors benefited from a 30% increase in crossover deliveries and rising fleet sales in recording its biggest gain in 9 months -- 16%.

Nissan Motor Co. was up 28% and Chrysler Group rose 20% -- its 13th straight month with a gain at least that high. At Ford Motor Co., June sales advanced 7%.

Outweighing uncertainty

"The combination of new products, available credit, lower fuel prices and modest economic growth was a stronger influence on consumer behavior than economic and political uncertainty," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales for GM.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expected light-vehicle sales in June to run at a 13.8 million seasonally adjusted annualized rate. Prior to May's dip, the 2012 annualized rate of sales had averaged 14.5 million through April. In June 2011, the annualized sales rate was 11.6 million.

Toyota said it sold 177,795 Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles in June. The 60% increase followed an 87% surge in May sales. Sales at the Toyota division jumped 55%.

Honda said its June sales jumped 49%. The Honda brand's 3 core products -- Accord, Civic, and CR-V -- each posted sales gains of 50% or more.

Sales at the Honda division advanced 46% while Acura volume jumped 77%.

"With robust inventories and great customer demand, it feels good to be back in the race,"
said John Mendel, American Honda's head of sales.

Kia reported a 14% increase and corporate sibling Hyundai advanced 8%.

GM's 16% increase was the biggest since a 20% gain last September. The automaker's retail sales increased 8% and fleet deliveries rose 36%.

Cadillac bounces back

Sales at Chevrolet and GMC rose 15% while Cadillac posted its 1st gain in volume -- 12% -- after 8 straight monthly declines.

Ford said its car sales were flat, utility-vehicle demand jumped 25% and pickup volume edged up 1.2%. Sales at the Ford division climbed 7%, while Lincoln climbed 2.5%.

Chrysler reported a 20% increase in June sales, with volume at the Chrysler brand rising 63 percent and Jeep deliveries increasing 23%. Dodge -- Chrysler's biggest division -- posted a 2% gain.

Chrysler's car sales rose 42%; truck deliveries were up 12%.

It was the 27th consecutive month Chrysler has posted an increase in U.S. sales. The automaker's share of the U.S. market had climbed to 11.5% this year through May, up from 9.8% through May 2011.

"Continuous improvement remains a key focus at Chrysler as we have steadily increased sales, improved quality, added production and created jobs," Reid Bigland, head of the Dodge brand and U.S. sales operations for Chrysler, said in a statement.

Nissan said its sales rose 28%, with Infiniti surging 66% for a 2nd straight month and the Nissan brand up 25%.

Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru and Volkswagen Group were the only automakers to gain market share last month.

Subaru said its June sales advanced 40% after the earthquake disrupted stockpiles a year ago.

Among other automakers, Porsche said June sales climbed 18% and Volvo said demand was flat at 7,107 units.

At Volkswagen Group's VW brand, June sales jumped 34%; Audi deliveries rose 26%.

Jaguar Land Rover said June sales were up 2% after Jaguar fell 26% and Land Rover gained 14%.

The BMW Group reported June sales of 27,720 BMW and Mini vehicles, an increase of 3% over June 2011. BMW brand deliveries rose 0.4%.

"Demand is strong though we've been constrained by new model ramp up but supply will soon catch up in the 2nd half of the year," Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America, said in a statement.

Still on track

U.S. sales have advanced 15% this year through June to 7,272,096 units.

Toyota, Chrysler, VW Group and Daimler AG have gained share for the year, while GM, Ford, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan and BMW Group have lost ground. Honda's share has remained flat at 9.6%.

Despite mixed economic signals, analysts believe U.S. auto sales are on track to hit 14 million or more for the year -- the best annual showing since 2007.

"Despite some headwinds, we see rising U.S. auto sales in the 2nd half," S&P Capital equity analyst Efraim Levy said in a statement today.

While lackluster employment growth, weak consumer spending and extremely hot weather across much of the country may have dampened demand in June, falling gasoline prices, easing credit terms and pent-up demand are aiding new car and truck sales.

The average car and light truck on the road today is nearly 11 years old, indicating consumers are holding onto vehicles longer. Kelley Blue Book says the average new-car shopper during the 1st quarter owned an 8-year-old vehicle with 85,328 miles.

Analysts and dealers say demand was soft early in June and picked up as the month progressed, aided by falling gas prices and incentives tied to July 4 holiday promotions.

TrueCar.com said industrywide incentives averaged $2,432 last month, up 1.5% compared with June 2011. Chrysler, General Motors and Nissan offered some of the highest discounts in June, while Hyundai/Kia, Toyota and Honda offered some of the lowest deals, TrueCar said.

Storm clouds on horizon?

But the auto industry faces growing risks over the next 18 months, some analysts believe, fueled in part by uncertainty over the U.S. presidential election, softer economic growth, and Europe's mounting economic woes.

"There are signs that the current global economic slowdown may curtail future growth, leading to a leveled sales pace in the next 6 to 12 months," Kelley Blue Book analysts warned last week.

The Federal Reserve last month trimmed its outlook for U.S. economic growth to no more than 2.4% this year, down from an April forecast of no more than 2.9%.

Last month, Citigroup analyst Itay Michaeli and Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lache each cut their 2013 industry sales estimates by 500,000 cars and light trucks, citing slowing growth and falling consumer confidence.

Michaeli cut his outlook for 2013 to 14.5 million sales from 15 million. Lache reduced his 2013 estimate to 14.2 million from 14.7 million.

"We see potential for additional headwinds from the crisis in Europe, and headwinds from U.S. federal budget cuts which may take effect in January,"
Lache wrote in a June 25 report.

well with regards to #1 retail brand, thats for Toyota alone, not for Toyota Corporation.

As to PRNewswire, they probably didnt bundle VW/Audi/Porsche numbers because VW announces them separately. I would guess to show how good Audi/Porsche are doing, if they just had 53k for VW, thats less than Hyundai without KIA.

Also add Malibu sales of 31,402 and it's #2. There are a lot of strong sellers in this segment.

super surprised to see the RDX moved out almost 3100 copies. we are looking for SUV and test drove the MDX, RDX and RX. both RX and MDX can actually be obtained for lower price than RDX since MDX and RX are hugely discounted (as in, 4k to 5k off MSRP). you'd be lucky to get 1000 dollar off MSRP from RDX.

However, even with those incentives, my parents still have their eye set on the FWD RDX. i must say it is such a huge improvement over the last one and the Acura dealer i went to cannot have enough of them (and i think they sold 2 when we were there).

i hope mmarshall can do a RDX review.

That's b/c
1. They are still selling and closing out the old RDX. In about 6 months we can see a better picture.
2. Most SUVs sell
3. Loyal Honda fans will be loyal. The RDX literally offers nothing new, no world firsts and is simply a RX light. Honda was smart simply making it bigger and less offensive looking for loyal buyers to buy.

I'm not surprised seeing the RDX sell over 3,000 considering it cost essentially the same as a Pilot or Highlander without the third row , i'd rather go for it. I can't believe the Sonata consistently sells so strong , I don't think it's that great of a car. It's time Honda just kill of the Insight and CR-Z.
