But unless you’re an auto enthusiast, you may not know the difference from the s350 and the s65, which they get away with it but the model dilution makes me wonder sometimes for some shoppers do they think “do I want to be seen in a car that someone with half the money can afford”…..

Maybe we are just getting use to seeing all these great lookiing cars regardless of price, that it takes something extraordinary to turn our heads, 8 years ago the CLS made you look twice, now I see 30 A7’s on the way to work and I don’t even blink.

It is true now that exotic brands like Bentley or Ferrari get more main stream and they continue to offer lower end models, they seems less and less special. A Bentley is way less special or exotic compare to 15 years ago. But everything is relative. As a Bentley get more common and less special, an AMG S-Class is down right pedestrian, especially now that a S63 looks very similar to a C250 AMG package. A S63 barely stand out in traffic anymore then a $50k Lexus GS.
At least when people see a Bentley badge, they know is special and think it is like $200k. They see a S63 and they don't even know it is expensive or special, they think it is the same car as their cousin's C250 AMG package that they are paying $250 a month for. If you tell them a S63 is $180k, they are like what? For real? He is getting rip off man, it barely looks more then $100k.

Oh yes, S65 or any 65 in general, is wayyyyy more rare then the Continental GT. Because I think most owners think like me, when they are spending $200k+ on a car, they want status, they want something that stands out and looks expensive or special. They don't want a MB badge.
We car guys know how cool the 65 is, but regular folks don't even know the 65 exist, the S65 looks exactly the same as a $110k S550 AMG sport to them. I know an Asian lady who is completely shallow and materialistic and is obsessed with Mercedes. She does not even know MB make a S65 that is $200k+, she think $100k S550 is the most expensive MB anyone can buy. I believe that apply to most non car folks.
This comes back to the same argument that we all think Hyundai needs a premium brand for the Genesis and Equus to be successful. And no matter how close to quality and amenities a Camry V6 XLE or Avalon Limited to a ES350, the ES350 still looks much higher end due to the luxury badge (sorry 1SICKLEX for mentioning Camry and ES in the same sentance). Same thing right, to a non car guy, a $32k V6 XLE Camry looks the same as the $22k base model Camry with hub caps.
At $200k, it needs another higher badge to stand out. That's why the Maybach brand exist. The S65 is on the very edge of needing a higher badge.

You know I love the CL63..........but that thing sure don't have much status. For that car, they really need to lose the "C" in the name and give it an "S". Like in the old days the 560SEC, it sounds high end cause it is S-Class. I don't know how many times people mistake his CL63 with the C63, oh yes you got that little C-Class with the big motor in it that all the high school kids are buying for $30k now............that sucks Then you have to explain the CL is a S-Class that cost 3X as much...........they are like what?
Like your friend say that Bentley is not a 300C? They think a S65 is the same as the $250 a month C250 AMG Sport that the janitor at my work drive.

If Bentley aren't special anymore, what does that make the Mercedes badge? Don't get me wrong, I love the AMG S-Class, I just hate the fact that the 8X cheaper C250 share the same badge and even look about the same.
If you want to make fun of Bentley some more, Hyundai copied the Bentley badge. So a Continental GT can be a Hyundai 300C to an ignorant person.

Go ask a non car guy which one is cooler? Which one is $250 a month and which one is $2500 a month?
That's the main reason why I am not into the AMG S-Class, because it doesn't look like much. And I am poor. Imagine how a rich guy think.
