Default How safe is our cars?

Really thinking about it, all that is between the people outside and your car is a simple little lock and a OEM keyless entry alarm.

So it got me thinking, how really safe is your car if you park it overnight somewhere or leave it locked. Even a smash and grab for a window is pretty quite easy, or people with the right "tools" can easily get into a car.

Just a thought. What do you guys think?

I have a friend who never locks his car. I ask him why and he says that he'd rather pay to replace a stolen stereo than pay to replace a stolen stereo AND broken window.

I lock my car whenever I get out of it though.

That's not all that is between people outsude and your car. There is the LAW which prevents some crime.

Think about. Smash a window, steal the car, steal what is inside..those are some serious crimes right there.

The most important thing is to not leave something of value in sight.

interesting way of thinking, if thats the case, im assuming he doesnt leave anything inside his car? its so easy to spot an unlocked car.

true, but the thiefs mentality is they are ok with it as long as they get away. how many times on the forum have we heard of things getting stolen, broken into damaged, etc. adn the thief doesnt get caught?

heck a few weeks ago i just saw a thread about somebodys 2gs fogs getting stolen and another authenic tte lip and mac roof spoiler getting stolen.

You could say the same thing about your house...there's only a small lock on your door, and most houses don't even have an alarm.

And anyone could break in while your away.

I think the thing that protects you the most is the how hard it is to get away with breaking in. There should be security cameras everywhere

most of the time security camera at shopping malls, stores, etc. are in no way helpful in catching the person who did it (which would be long gone)

my friend had his car broken into and when asking the landlord to reveal or let him see the tape, they would not let him and stated that they watched over it and couldnt ID the person.

my theory? they didnt have cameras, mind you two days later they went and changed out all the lights (which were mostly burned out in the parking lot)

Theives looks for two things:

1. Thieves look for valuables. If I leave my purse on a passenger seat, and an identical CT200 is parked next to me without a purse. They will break into my car.

2. Thieves look for ease of access. A car unlocked is easy access.

The friend you have who leaves his car unlocked is an idiot.

The best thing to do is not leave valuables in sight. And lock your doors.

If your car is targeted, it's gone or will get broken in no matter how you trying to prevent it. Just be street smart and careful wherever you go:

1. No valuable items/changes in the car or in clear sight. Or basically nothing in it. My client's BMW X5 just busted in because she had cup noodle in a paper bag, and thief thought it's something valuable.

2. Park in busy area where there are more traffic and people.

3. Park in brighter area, under a light for example.

4. Cover up your windshield even at night, I do it all the time wherever I park, with my tinted windows, it is very hard to see what's in or try to locate the door lock/handle.

5. Make your car harder to break in or steal, put a steering wheel lock or something, even though the lock can be cut in seconds, but making it difficult will make the thief to find a easier target.

Etc. Etc.

The 'security' cameras serve to protect the liability of its owner, not your safety/security.

Your friend is wrong. Bad Idea. I know people that say this too and it never ceases to amaze me...

I have been driving 10 years and I have never had a break in *knocks on wood*. I lock my doors and set the alarm. My wife has a bad habit of leaving her purse under the seat which really urks me. The only time I don't lock the vehicle is if its in my garage and I am in the house. Hell, then sometimes I leave the keys in it.

Yep it definitely does, but not to all thieves. My friend found out the hard way when his RSX wheels were stolen right off his RSX in the busiest campus parking lot in the middle of the afternoon! No witnesses or anything.

Theft is a crime of opportunity.
Give a thief any opportunity to steal your things and it's as good as gone.

Sometimes I wish somebody would steal my car, lol.

But with a rebuilt title, I don't know how much the ins. company would give me for it.
