I think its sad and pathetic for the M5 to have it. I have a feeling that this fake engine note BS will become more common.

 

It's actually different than the M5 unit. The M5 unit actually plays back noise in the cabin.

The soundaktor is a vibrating unit that adds a "raspy/throaty" noise to the natural engine noise. So it's like auto-tune for the engine. Whereas the M5 is like a lipsynch.

I have it on my car, I'll probably be unplugging it.

It is sad. The playback through the speakers is of the engine sounds recorded in a lab. This tech is getting lots of flack even on the bimmer forums by bimmer fanbois (who, as we know, are the most fanboyish fanbois there are ). Surprised with all their tech and expertise they couldn't engineer a sound tube which would transmit actual sounds of your engine into the cabin.
