Default Rumormill: Revamped Hyundai Sonata due in 2014

Revamped Hyundai Sonata due in 2014

So a new Sonata isn't as exciting as a new Chevrolet Corvette, but given the enthusiasm the current Hyundai midsize sedan has generated around these parts, musing about what might be coming down the pipeline is worth at least a few minutes. Hyundai's Korean CEO Kim Choon-ho has told Reuters that a "revamped" Sonata is due in just two years, following closely on the heels of a new Genesis in late 2013.

In case you haven't been paying attention, we have loved the new Sonata and its Optima cousin from Kia ever since they first hit our shores back in 2010. This pair is the class of the midsize class, and we can only wonder what Hyundai has planned to keep them on top, given the fierce competition.

We'd suspect the new Sonata will be launched here as a 2015 model, which would make some sense. Though we haven't driven it yet, the new-for-2013 Ford Fusion looks poised to bring the goods, and the next generation of the hot-selling Nissan Altima will soon be unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

This is a pretty shaky report. The Sonata has yet to gain a facelift, which I think is what comes next before being all new. Surprised no one in the article caught that.
Regardless, Hyundai is spitting out new models and/or facelifts faster than sweat dripping off a boxer's face. Makes me wonder why Toyota and Lexus are stretching out their models so long when they sell even more units than Hyundai does. The money is there to throw in.

The facelift will come at the end of this year for the 2013 model year. Hyundai typically does full redesigns one year after they release a facelift. I think its good because by that time there will be a new Fusion, Altima, Accord, Avenger, 200 and Malibu already on the market.

I know it will get a toned down grill for the refresh as well as different wheel designs. Perhaps some feature updates. What they really need is retuned suspension and steering upgrades since that seems to be the only thing lacking right now.

toned down grill? the new genesis coupe, veloster, etc., got a more 'menacing' front.

Why would anyone wait two years for a Sonata when (as the article says) the Fusion and the Altima are about to be unveiled and should be pretty good? Would seem like Hyundai just pushed people off the fence.

with a new model a couple of years away, that doesn't mean there won't be improvements to sonata. fusion looks great, i haven't seen altima.

it's a great time for consumers. with a great line-up including the optima as well, i don't think hyundai/kia is panicking.

Its like the 2002 Altima all over again A stylish car that does't drive better than the Camry that the internets go crazy about.. B/C the bottom line is this entire class are cars made to please the average buyer who's idea of a LSD is a drug and not a Limited Slip Diff.

Now only if they tone down the interior a bit and use premium-quality leather dash, leather steering wheel, leather door panels (100%), leather wrapped center console, leather stitched around the stereo and information deck, leather wrapped b and c pillar I would then be interested. Where is the mini-Genesis sedan. I hate plastics. And I'm not talking just leather... it has to be well padded deep cushy leather.
Sounds like you want an ES350 type product, or an Azera

A RWD sub-Genesis is on the way as well.

I would hope for Hyundai's sake this model comes out near the end of 2014, and isn't rushed out. Otherwise quality problems will be guaranteed to occur.
