7 or 8 is the magic number. I love my 7 speed in my Merc, its nice to cruise at 75mph and turn over at 2000 rpm.

Haha a bicycle has as much as I think 20 or even 30 gears......or even more.

Anyways, why nine speeds? It's not enough. It MUST be:

For what it's worth, the new base model Accord will have a CVT like the Altima.

Honda has been trashed rightfully so for 5 speed barely having a 6 speed. If they need to go to ZF for a 9 speed we should not have issues with it. They will need more gears to compete. It is proven that more gears help with fuel economy, keep RPM low for a quieter car and have been as reliable as a 3 speed. With Honda's new engines coming they promise to be super efficient they need new transmissions to maximize economy. This is a good move to me.

yet, it'll only be available on high trim models of Odyssey and Pilot. Accords will still be stuck with the 5 speed auto

I find it to be excessive. Personally, I find anything more than 6 to be excessive unless its a supercar thats designed to do 200 mph.
I remember a few years ago when Ford tried a 6-speed in the Explorer. People complained about how busy the transmission was and the next year they went back to a 5-speed.
I just hope Honda builds this transmission here in Ohio. They are spending a lot of money expanding their transmission plant here in the state and it would be a great source of jobs in a struggling economy.

What can I say about Honda marketing....buying a transmission from other company that was build for other cars and calling it their own work.

I am going to build my own special car soon, it's gonna be a lot of work since it will involve me going into a dealership picking out the color and the options I want and then writing a check for it.

In Honda's world that would qualify me as a car builder / designer / customization specialist.

Where on earth did you read that Honda bought this transmission and that Honda is taking credit for it? It's been very clear throghout this thread that the transmission is built by ZF, and no, Honda has not taken credit for it.

on that note, if my memory serves me right. as of today, Honda is the only large car manufacture that actually produces their own transmission.

More like a grenade.

I think the confusion is not with Honda but whomever wrote the article gave it a misleading title, leading to confusion. Honda is not building the 9 speed they are working with ZF to source one.

Honda especially, some of their models have been plagued by faulty automatic transmissions.
My brothers TL had two transmission put into it after it was purchased. We bought a TL after that and it was fine, but I am aware of the common issues with their automatics

Every manufacturer outsource some of their parts. Not everyone has the capability to build everything in-house, even Toyota. Mind you one of the best Toyota transmission (Supra 6spd V160) was made by Getreg, not Toyota themselves.

Many factories will offer various car parts, but its the car companies that will spec it out and own the design.

The 8 speed in the Genesis is also built by the manufacturer, Hyundai

Most cars, IMO, don't need more than five or six gears. Nine, IMO, is clearly overkill.
