Default Mazda reveals next-gen MX-5 chassis, will be 100+ kg lighter

To benefit from SkyActiv technologies

Mazda has revealed the chassis of its highly anticipated next generation MX-5 Miata, thus confirming a report we published almost a month ago.

Debuting today in New York alongside a 25th Anniversary Edition is the SKYACTIV-CHASSIS of the next generation MX-5 Miata which Mazda says will go back to its roots by adopting a smaller and lighter footprint.

Speaking of lightness, the roadster will lose more than 100 kg (220 lbs) and will be more powerful compared to the outgoing model. Details are scarce at the moment but Mazda says the reimagined Miata will have a lower center of gravity together with an increased body rigidity and will be safer in case of a collision.

Mazda hasn't said anything about a launch date but most likely the all-new MX-5 Miata will be revealed before the end of the year, with sales commencing sometime in 2015.

The local Mazda dealer is expecting me trading WRX for this. Always like Miata more than 86 twin.

I actually want to get another car in 2016, but FT1 won't be here by then.
Miata is a better driver's car overall
than 86. Even with less powerful engine, it's more fun to drive. The new one will be lighter and more powerful with lower CoG. It's going to be a blast.

I don't know if the Miata is going to be more powerful, per se.

I would understand a better power-to-weight ratio and better balance...

2.0L Skyactive will boost power. My guess would be around 20hp. That should be plenty if it really sheds 200lb+. It's almost at Lotus territory for much less money.

We can only hope.

I haven't driven neither cars, but the reviews and comparison test I have seen and read; the FR-S usually wins over the MX-5. Testers also noted that it has less body roll than a MX-5.

Before the FR-S though I think the MX-5 may have been the most balanced and affordable buys out there. And the reason it would lose now is the FR-S is newer and able to compete against the goals set by the Mazda. Well that and the FR-S was born from a company that just created the LFA and we know how well that drives

Default 2015 Mazda MX-5 render looks sublime

Set to be revealed later this year

Well-known "automotive manipulator" Theophilus Chin has envisioned a very sleek look for the next generation Mazda MX-5.

Miata fans are eagerly waiting for the next generation model set to come out later this year but until then all they have to rely on are spy photos and renders like this one which hopefully will have something in common with the real deal. Most likely not a lot of people will mind if the new MX-5 will look exactly like this one and even if it won't, we expect Mazda's Kodo design language to offer a very attractive styling as seen in recent products such as the 6 and 3, as well as the Hazumi concept.

The Japanese marque announced its intentions of getting back to Miata's roots for the next-gen model which is why it will be smaller and lighter compared to the outgoing model. It will actually go through a considerable 100+ kg (220 lbs) diet and is going to adopt a lower center of gravity. The vehicle will also be more powerful and will feature a more rigid body that will also make it safer in case of a collision.

Sales of the next-gen Mazda MX-5 are programmed to begin next year but the model will probably be revealed towards the end of 2014.

Well, OK.....Maybe for those who have arm or shoulder problems and can't work the top by hand. But, for most healthy adults (and even most teens) , the Miata's ingeniously simple, easy-to-use ragtop sets an industry standard. The former dual header-latches above the windshield are now down to one larger one in the middle, and the whole system folds right back into its well with a simple flick of the wrist and shoulder. At the D.C. Auto Show, sitting in the driver's seat, I used to unlatch and drop the top for spectators there in three seconds, start-to-finish (no, I wasn't working for Mazda). Then I'd bring it back up and secure/latch it in another three seconds. The last couple of years, I've been able to do two seconds dropping it, and three seconds back up....no, I am not kidding.

Compare that, for example, with the former Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, which required four or five different physical functions when raising/lowering the top and usually involved getting out of the car.
