An I4 2.5 from the Camry would not help it in any way. So maybe the real issue is weight of the IS as the car is way too heavy for just 204 hp. Can you imagine a Toyota Avalon with just 204 hp? I say that because the IS250 and Avalon are about the same weight and the IS250awd is actually heavier than the Avalon.

I imagine the 3.5 from the Camry or Avalon would do it wonders, but that likely would kill sales of the IS350 as the engines are too similar.

Simply, the 2.5 is too under powered for the IS.
So a base IS250 is 3400lbs, fits right in with it's competition then.

Acura TSX 3,490 (FWD)
Infiniti G25 3,552 (RWD) 3,751 (AWD)
Audi A4 3509 (FWD) 3,685 (AWD)
Cadillac ATS 2.5L 3,315 (RWD)
Mercedes C250 3,428 (RWD)
BMW 3-Series 3,410 (RWD)

Most all of the IS's competitors require premium fuel.

Avalon is much newer than the IS and saw weight reduction. Rest assured the next IS will be lighter. But 2.5L and 3.5L powertrains will carry over. Changing over come midcycle refresh. 2016 model year is most likely for this change as it will be 10 years since both the 2.5 DI and 3.5 DI bowed in early 2005 as 2006 models.

Who said to use a camry 2.5? Let alone a camry 3.5? Neither of these could be adapted as they are for FWD cars. The next IS300h and GSh for that matter will get a specific hybrid system for RWD cars.

Probably would have broke even considering they wouldn't have had to deal with all the carbon build up .

You mean 14 no?

No sorry, was referring to the Euro spec IS300h. All I know is it's coming. If and when I hear any details on it I'll divulge. So far only 250 and 350 models have been pegged for US. Though I think it would be a travesty not to offer a hybrid IS in the US. Personally I do think it's coming but not until after the NA sedans arrive. Followed by coupe, vert, hybrid, F. Not necessarily in that order though

New JDM Toyota Crown is going to be unveiled next month, it will have 300h engine.
What Response is reporting is that gas engine will have 18hp more than Camry Hybrid in Japan. Torque of electric motors seems to be 10% more as well. Battery should be still NiMH. We dont know the battery output which is the limiting factor here (motor itself is 143hp, but usually they cant output more than 40-45hp from battery)... so generously assuming same hp difference and battery output of GS450h, we arrive to max hp of 230hp for IS300h that is possible. Of course, it could end up being 215hp :-). Or it could have lion batteries for Lexus which could output a little bit more hp (probably not likely).

Interesting part is that, Crown's are based on GS and this thing in Japan will have only 0.4 MPG less than Camry hybrid. So quite possibly, we could have GS300h in Europe that gets "39-40 mpg" (based on US standards). That kind of seems wild right? Especially if they manage 52hp motor output like with GS, it will have 230hp... which is perfectly fine.

This is basically big refresh for Crown, similar to what they did with 2013 LS... here is Crown Athlete... notice the interior, which was similar in 2008, and seems to be where Rav4 and Avalon take their inspiration from (look at center stack and how it goes up).

Supposedly dynamically it is to be even better than GS vs competition. Looks will be "out of this world".

IS250 is there to be an cheaper option, as IS300h will be €5k more expensive in Germany (10k currently between 250 and GS450h I guess).

Battery will fit into the spare wheel place.

All orders for old IS have a deadline of November 2012 so new IS should be sold 3 months later max.

so going back to my post from July... it seems that close to 240hp is actually possible if they end up using lithium batteries.... if they stick with Nimh, up to 230hp seems possible. Or it could be 215hp :-).
