Chevy Corvette C7 prototype spied testing!

The Corvette is the very definition of a halo car, and the fact that 2013 marks its sixtieth year in production is nothing short of a miracle. The seventh-generation Corvette is still a model year away, during which time Chevy plans to send off the C6 with a special edition 60th Anniversary 427 Convertible.

Development of the C7, however, continues at full speed, and we have the very first shots of a prototype being tested in cold weather to prove it. The car in question is wrapped in vinyl covering, underneath which hides the familiar black-and-white swirl paint job we see so often on prototypes. Even still, we can identify some aspects of the evolution that will take place between the C6 and C7.

For one, comparing profile shots of this prototype with the C6, it's apparent that the front wheels have moved farther forward, increasing the dash-to-axle ratio and likely the wheelbase. The rear end also appears to be larger, with a higher deck lid and slightly longer overhang. We also noticed that this prototype's side mirrors are a different shape than the C6's, and its dual tailpipes are positioned closer together to form a perfectly spaced line of four pipes.

There's no evidence of a split rear window and a mid-engine layout is clearly not in the cards. These photos should put those wild rumors to rest, but what's under the hood and how the interior has been improved are still unknowns.

I wonder if the car sounded like it had a V8 when they shot these photos. The V6 rumor is bubbling

I was wondering that too ; I hope that they stay with a V8!! Although there might be a possibility of a smaller displacement and forced induction to go for the better MPG's. That's one thing that worries me because I LOVE the big displacement N/A vette engines (hell it's even in my name ) ,but a official LS7 convertible had my attention

perhaps in a base model guise. I don't see them dumping the V8 just yet. Infact I'm inclined to believe a small displacement 4.0-5.5L V8 is in the works. Course that's just me

Hope they will upgrade the interior this time. Vette's interior is always ugly.

You can bet GM has been listening and addressed this with the C7

Yeah, me too! The C5 had to be the coolest looking American car when it was out, but it had the interior of a Chevy Cavalier. The C6 was better, but it could have been better.

The C5 overlapped (till the 2005 intro of the C6) my personal favorite which I believe that title belongs to the Ford GT circa 2003-2006

Bob Lutz said, not long ago, that had it not been for GM's financial-meltdown, the C6 probably would have gotten a mid-engine. The development funds, of course, dried up with GM's bankrupcy, and then, when the new CAFE restrictions came along, GM had to take some of what were the Corvette's C7 funds and divert them to other projects like the Volt and other new small cars. Simple logic says we still don't have a mid-engine 'Vette, but that picture could (?) be deceptive. GM still hasn't formally spilled the beans on whether the C7 will actually have the mid-engine or not.
