If you plan on exploring, consider a laptop with Delorme's Street Atlas and GPS antenna. I used one with a Jotto desk on my first RX's cross-country tour and it was far superior to anything from TomTom, Garmin, etc. It has plenty of route planning options, far more usable POI data, plus you can take it with you when you stop for the night to update your plans for the following day. I had to reroute a couple of times to avoid snow-closed roads and a major forest fire. Being able to place waypoints where you want them and let the software calculate the route was a vast improvement over "avoid" options that let the system guess how you want to go. Besides, with a large, zoomable screen, you don't find yourself squinting at a little phone-sized panel for all of the data you require.
