Default Motortrend Camry SE V6, VS. Passat SEL VR6 & Sonata SE 2.0t

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...el_comparison/

The third part to the MT Camry vs. Sonata vs. Passat road test and surprise surprise (not), the Camry gets snubbed again to the Passat.

Unfortunately for the Sonata, it was the only one that wasn't quicker than the aforementioned M5 and 500E. In fact, at 7.0 seconds to 60 and 15.4 at 91.5 mph to the quarter mile, the 2.0T barely edged the 200-horse Camry Hybrid. When comparing high-performance variants, being last is never a positive, especially when it's last by a lot. And the subpar performance wasn't just in straight-line stats; in all objective handling tests, the Sonata rose to the top in none. Hyundai eschewed a V-6 in favor of a turbo I-4, citing comparable power, less weight, and improved fuel economy. Acceleration was the slowest, and observed fuel economy nearly tied for last. And the 2.0T was indeed the lightest car of the three, but only by 35 pounds compared with the Camry.
This pretty much sums it up for me in regards to the "Sonata Hype". I'll stick with my NA V6 thank you much!

Just about everything. Those era Passats were electrical day and nightmares, amongst many other things. The W8 also made the car nose heavy and less of a handler.

i am surprised Passat got 0-60 in 5.7s... based on that result, this is first comparo they won on numbers alone.
just that other mags didnt find its performance anywhere as good.

(Sonata)

The ride, while not as compliant as the Passat's, was quiet and comfortable, if a bit too busy for our tastes.

(Camry)

The suspension boasts 15-percent-stiffer springs and shocks. But while the SE gripped for a respectable 0.81 g and lived up to its sporty badge, we do wish those springs and shocks were about 10 percent softer. As they are, the Camry's ride suffers, relaying just about every bump in the road.

When even the auto press, who worship at the altar of handling, start to complain about the ride-quality in today's cars (even family-sedans), and the over-emphasis on stiffness, THAT tells you something.

This is what I myself have been saying for about the last 5 years or so.

Yep. The overwhelming majority of buyers in this segment (and other segments as well) don't need their cars to have sporty aspirations.

Even though it might placate the automotive press and make for good marketing speak, family cars aren't driven at 10/10ths gonig through the normal daily routines.

the new camry has some seriously engineering.
it has least amount of HP and torque, but matching the acceleration of Passet while delivering superior fuel efficiency. i like it.

by the way, those test result should silence those ignorance red necks about "HP moves cars, torque wins race" take a look at Sonata 2.0T (3335 lb) that has 274HP @6000 rpm and 269 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm, compare with Camry (3370 lb) that has 268 hp @ 6200 rpm and 248 lb-ft @ 4700 rpm. if "torque wins race" hold any truth, then Sonata should smoke Camry to oblivion. it is lighter in weight, a lot more in torque at a lot lower rpm, and guess what.. Camry smoke Sonata from start to finish, it is NOT EVEN comparable. quarter mile: 15.4 sec @ 91.5 mph vs 14.2 sec @ 100.6 mph.

lastly, the VW come with the base price of 33.7k. that is 6.3k more than the base price for Camry V6, or about 23% more expensive (granted, it may be better equipped), but at 34k, i will not buy a vw passet.

Because of how chassis/suspensions/tires are designed now, there are very few vehicles today that I would consider soft and comfortable-riding. The closest are the Cadillac DTS, Buick Lucerne, Lexus LS460, Hyundai Equus, and Mercedes S550....with the Lexus ES350, Toyota Avalon, and Mercedes E-class close behind.

In general, IMO, BMW products have the best-combinaton of steering/handling/ride-comfort ...they seem to be able to keep the most in handling while sacrificing the least in ride-comfort. Surprisingly, the new Buick Lacrosse also has an outstanding combination.
