Default Dan Wheldon killed in Indy Car Race

I am surprised I have not found any links yet but it seems to be confirmed from watching the race Dan Wheldon was killed in a major accident in the beginning of the race in Las Vegas.

RIP to Dan and condolences to his family.

Really sad news. I watched the race - the accident itself looked bad enough and then when there was a total void of any updates on his condition I started to fear the worst.

Utmost respect for a man who died pursuing his dreams. He was a really great guy, one of the nicest drivers around and I'm sure gonna miss him. RIP.

Yes, a sad day....RIP. It also brings back sad memories of ten years ago, when Dale Earnhart was killed in his faithful #3.

Auto racing, though, despite the astounding safety-improvements in modern years, still carries an element of risk. But it is much lower today, of course, than the 50s and 60s, when a whole lot of drivers got killed.

What a horrible wreck. Nevada has had some bad luck lately with crashes and accidents. Reno is still fresh.

OH GOD DAMN IT!!!! DIDN'T THEY LEARN THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That racing track is pure bulls#it!! Who ever thought of fitting 30+ cars on 1.5mile oval while doing 200mph should be suspended for life and he/she/them is/are directly responsible for death of our beloved Danni. That track can barely fit 15 cars to race safely.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway needs to go off calendar for all major racing series. Too much risk, way too much risk. How many more people need to get injured or die there for somebody to say this track is outdated for our needs and standards.

What a terrible loss. Watching the race, it was evident shortly after the crash that this was more than just a wreck. The word evidently passed up and down pit road, with groups in prayer, friends consoling friends, and commentators avoiding what was rapidly becoming obvious: we had lost a champion and a beloved friend. Our prayers continue for the family and friends of Dan Wheldon.

Of course with the end of the season and the new cars anticipated for next, there will be an investigation of track safety by IndyCar. We hope that a change in safety equipment, even a review of race venues, can be of some help, but we have to understand that racing is inherently dangerous and there is no way you can completely engineer horrendous injury and death out of the formula. One good thing to come out of this tragedy was the spontaneous display of love and support from all of the teams and drivers. The racing community never looked better than it did yesterday afternoon . . . they made us proud, even in our loss.

That's one of the reasons why NASCAR uses carburator-restrictor-plates on some tracks......to keep the cars from reaching speeds that officials think is unsafe for that particular track.
