Default wife is car shopping...

we're a little scared to keep her 2008 Audi TT that just ran out of warranty....so here's what she wants and doesn't want....

Must have's...

around $30K
good MPG (avg is 31mpg in her TT 2.0T)
AUTO
no ragtops
reliable
semi-sporty
new OR CPO with low mileage (under 15K)
coupe or sedan
2009 or newer
No hatches (eliminates CT-H and A3)
no plastic wheel covers

Cars she's NOT interested in getting:
VW GTI (I think its a perfect car for her but she thinks its a young person's car...she's mid 40's)
Scion tC (doesn't like)
370Z/350Z (another car I think would be good for her)
VW Beetle
BMW 1 series (thinks they are ugly)
C6 (too $$ anyway)
CT-H
A3
Mini Cooper

Notes

she likes the pics of the Toyota FT-86
We've owned an IS250 & 350 so she's not interested in those.

thanks for the help!

VW CC or Eos?

They're stylish with enough sport to make it more interesting than most.

I don't blame you. Some German cars can become money-pits when the warranty and/or free-service runs out.

No hatches (eliminates CT-H and A3)
Why no hatches? With that restriction, you are eliminating one of the most versatile and useful body-styles.

I often don't recommend used cars (even CPOs). But, using the criteria you list here, you might want to consider a used Subaru Legacy. A used 2009 turbo Legacy GT offered an automatic (2010-2011 models have only the manual). Non-turbo models get at or close to the the 30 MPG highway mileage you want, and run on regular gas (so do the 3.0L and 3.6L H6 models, but their gas mileage is somewhat lower). Turbo models, of course, have sportier acceleration, but lower gas mileage (25 MPG on the highway), and use more-expensive premium gas. Legacys have generally been reliable...especially the 2005-2009 versions, which didn't have the front-end shimmy problems that plagued the 2010-2011 models. With any Legacy, of course, also goes the benefits of AWD.....something your wife will appreciate in bad weather.

I actually got her going on a WRX, but they are only manual tranny (which I would love!)

I'm eagerly awaiting info on the 2012 Impreza model but will also check out the Legacy.

I'm actually pushing a CC, but she thinks its a huge car; she's not too excited about the EOS either; she does like the new Jetta, but I haven't really pushed it.

A CPO'd A4 is also a possiblity

Who doesn't? I would personally buy one if the $20k production car looks identical to the original concept car.

Since you have a Toyota badge as a pic, you could get a CPO Camry Hybrid. They should be in the fuel range that you are talking about and meet all criteria except semi-sporty. They do make that SE version of the Camry that looks a bit more aggressive and I think would qualify as semi-sporty. The red on the SE looks so good...

Not a whole lot of cars are popping into my head that can get 30 mpg, LOL. Like previously mentioned, the TSX and A4 would be good choices. Might want to look into what leases are available on new cars. That might open up some other options, depending on what they are pushing right now.
