I always buy used car & I only buy Japanese. More specific, the models builds in Japan, Made-in-USA seem to have more problem)
-Yes, they make comparisons to Lexus, therefore providing free advertising for Lexus
-European similarity is not over-played because it's Opel, (not BMW or Mercedes)
-Resale/retained value impacts lease pricing, so in the end people do care (because of lower lease pricing which is what consumers want)
-Lexus pricing is negotiable (yes deeper discounts on Buicks are available), most astute buyers achieve supstantial discounts to close most Lexus deals.

The new LaCrosse has an absolutely superb combination of steering-response/ride-comfort/handling, but, in general, there are several areas that Lexus still outdoes Buick in. First, of course, there are no Buick hybrids (until the Buick Volt-clone debuts). Second, the Lexus paint-jobs and interior material-quality are noticeably better. And third, the Lexus drivetrain smoothness/refinement and noise isolation, except for the CT and GX, IMO, set industry-standards, though Buick's traditionally-smooth automatics and "Quiet-Tuning" engineering isn't far behind.

Lexus, BTW, doesn't need free advertising, whether it is at the hands of Buick or not. Buick's image and reputation in the marketplace is changing from that of the past (though Buick's past negative image was not always accurate). Lexus has already cemented its reputation, and doesn't need any further boosts.

Agreed on much of above. I don't really care about marketing slogans like "quiet-tuning".

. Plus Lexus reliability and resale value is in another league when compared to Buick.

. Lexus gets free advertising from these comparisons, needed or not needed.

I haven't seen as much LaCrosse vs. ES350 advertising for a while. Seems their ads now just advertise the merits of the car. Probably their strategy to phase out the comparisons after the model had more recognition.

During the launch, the Regal doesn't seem to be comparing itself to another cars, just using the sporty/European roots proposition.

Comparison is the worst form of advertising.
The message that is sent out when one create such an advertisement that is we do not know what we are doing, but we are making efforts to follow the leader, and here is where we stand on that. It shows total lack of confidence in your own abilities.

it may not look like Buick contribute much to GM in the U.S. but at GM largest market (China), Buick is the reason GM sell so well there.

Buick was featured in pretty much all the Hollywood movies that was imported to china during 1980 to 1990, and is the symbol of the ultimate american life. in fact, Buick sells so well in china that completely dwarfs Buick sold everywhere else in the world.
