If you need roomy and power, the Toyota Highlander is the best of the bunch. Though i'm biased towards the older body Pathfinder cause I have one but that thing sure loves to drink gas @ 12-13 MPG here on the streets of NYC.

I just recently sold my 2000 4Runner Limited 4WD with 128,000 miles for $8500 to a friend and it was near mint, up to date on all services. I replaced it with a 2008 Limited 4Runner. I miss the old one a lot, it was a little smaller but still plently on room for two small kids and I am 6'2". The 3.4L with mixed driving (Just because of where I live) always got me 17-19mpg. The new one with the 4.0L gets me 22-23mpg with mix driving. My vote is 4Runner, they hold their value like a champ, what would a 2000 Ford Explorer similar options and mileage be worth? ($2500 - $3000) Good luck with your search, a lot of smart car gurus in here.

Here is the 2000 (dearly missed)

I have to agree, the T4R's are great and reliable vehicles! I should know, I have had 4 of them My 2000 with the 3.4L V6 was a well built truck. Out of all my 4 4runners (2000, 2003, 2006, 2010), I kept them to about 60K and only twice were they ever brought to the dealer for anything but routine maintenance. Each time covered under warranty. One of the issues was a bad shock on the rear opening hatch, so very minor.

I would go with a 4runner. For the longest time i was looking for an 98-02 4runner last year and the only ones in my budget were with 170k+ miles....with a budget of 8 grand just like you. They are nice, but they retain their value so well its hard to find a low mileage one

Congrats on your decision and recent purchase. Trust me I know all about the back and forth decision weighing of looking for that "perfect" ride. I was going to suggest a Highlander after reading your initial post but you beat me to it and bought an even better LUX version. Sounds like you got a good deal. What color combo? Did you get AWD or FWD? Enjoy your ride!

Thanks guys! I got a pearl white/champagne combo; car is super nice inside and outside. The guy sold it cheap since it was sitting in his lot for too long and his customer base is never looking for those kinds of cars.

I was really considering a Highlander they had at one of the Toyota dealerships but my goodness, they wanted 12K for an 01 with 80K, nice interior but it rode like ****, there was rattles and a corner of the car and rear bumper was badly scratched... I told the wife that the insurance payment would dictate what car we would be getting; called GEICO: Higlander was 50/mo, rx300 57/mo... seems like only old retired people buy highlanders and rx's lol
