Spare us the hype and suspense.

What could BMW possibly surprise us with? A 5 GT-M? Some new model that nobody is asking for, which fills a niche category that nobody cares about?

Way to create confusion. Are they gonna rename M3 to 3M now?

Confusion for who??? Maybe for the 20 early 30 somethings who were not around in '78 when the original M1 roamed the streets.

Please forgive us, thou elderly master, for not being around in 78 when the mighty m1 was roaming the streets.

Actually Lambo was to build it but they could not b/c of their financial issues at the time. The M1 was the first "M" car.
Production of the M1 ended in 1981 after a production run of 445 units, 399 for the road and 46 in Procar trim.
It is a 6 cylinder. The first M5 followed years later with the same engine (and 635 CSI) as it was deemed too good to leave in one car. It was the fastest German car at the time.

The Germans are VERY GOOD at leveraging "history" to people, since most have no idea about the real stories.

The problem was that BMW Motorsport GmbH totally lacked the capacity to develop and build such a car all by itself. After all, this team of specialists had concentrated so far on "simply" turning series-production cars into racing cars, making the chassis and suspension tauter and the engine more powerful.

So of course 20 years later, we are hearing M1 etc and while it surely will be a great car, it simply cannot replicate the original.

M3, M5 and M6 will keep their names

The 1 series M car will not be called an M1
because itll conjure up images of the M1 in peoples minds and the 1 series M isnt a new version/replacement of that car

I think BMW are still plannin on releasing the M1 (even though the idea recently got axed)

the BMW efficient dynamics concept car (or whatever it was called) will prob be made into an M1 or something along those lines.

I'd call it the 1M. Seeing its not a true M1.

Agreed, I am thinking 135is to match the 335is, added horsepower, different front fascia and a few bells and wistles to justify the price increase over a standard 135i.

This model is a blasphemy to the heritage and history of the M1 .

I think it should be officially known as the 1M, not M1.

It's still a 1 Series, and looks awkward.
