We had a 2001, put 60K miles on with not an issue AND had it totalled in ATL accident on I-285... wife, father-in-law, and dog all walked without a scratch... NOTHING compares to that:thumbup :

I don't know if this is something that's important to you...but the Xterra is one of the slowest vehicles I have ever driven. It's embarrassing for this day and age.

261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque.

"Strong from a stop and around town. A 2WD SE did 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds in our test. The automatic reacts quickly enough to throttle inputs, but passing at highway speeds can be a bit labored with either transmission." -- Consumer Guide

Don't know what a 4X4 would do,though.Maybe just under 8.

I had a '95 Pathfinder that was a slug.153 hp V6

Yes, The Xterra is essentially a passenger-carrying version of the Nissan Frontier pickup. Same ladder frame, same ruggedness, same great ability off-road.........and the same bouncy ride.

The X5 is more of a cross over isn't it?
Yes, it is unibody and car-based. But, as such, it has some of the same great chassis/road manners of BMW sedans and coupes.

As for the Bimmer.. My stomach turns just thinking about a used BMW. They're awesome to drive but I don't envy owning one.
When the warranty and/or free maintenance expires, BMWs, like several upmarket European brands, can be money-pits.

Exactly. The other thing I like about the 4Runner is the insurance is quite low.

Oops. I was talking about the older model xterra.... like the early-mid 00's exterra. I have never tried the newer ones but those older models are mule slow....

I would strongly consider the 4runner as well. I do not think the new Xterras are built like the old ones. I do not think the Xterra is built in Japan either like the 4runner is which is a nice positive IMO. I actually hung out at the Xterra forum and I see many people have problems with the new ones. I also hang out at the 4runner forums and virtually no problems.

I am actually looking for a 2009 Toyota 4runner Trail Edition. I'm looking for a specific color also. If I find one I am willing to fly and drive it home since it is unlikely I will find one closer to home. These are hard to come by because they only offered them in 2009 which include a rear locker and ATRAC which never been offered on the 4th gen 4runner before.

That is one good looking X5, but the Xtrerra probably makes more sense.
