Default CPO vs USED

Which is better?

Would you rather get a used Lexus or a CPO Lexus?

I'm assuming you are talking about used vs CPO at dealerships as you cannot (as far as I know) buy a CPO in the private market between two individuals. As such at a dealership, there are a lot more CPO than just used so right off the bat, variety will be much more so you may not even be able to find a non-CPO car that you want. That being all said, as long as the history and reports of the car are clean, and if you want to buy an extended warranty (i.e., aftermarket through your insurance or whatnot), than you would get a much better deal on a used car. Personally, when I went car shopping at Longo Lexus, the largest Lexus dealer in the west, I don't even think I saw any non-CPO cars albiet I never did ask either.

CPO is usually my preference, the factory-backed warranty is just one main advantage.

Uhhhhh, if both cars were priced the same and one came with the better warranty, what is there to actually consider?

In Socal most Lexus dealers will be willing to sell their CPO Lexus as non-CPO. They will usually only knock $1K off by doing that. Not worth it IMO unless there is still a lot of the original warranty left.

Well, the thing is this. Here in Southern California (Pasadena), within a 50 mile radius of where I live, a used GS350 (from any dealership, not just Lexus), starts at $24,000, where as a CPO GS350 starts at $28,000. The CPO has 18k miles less than the used one, but it also costs $4k more.

I just worry that even if I buy a car that shows that it passed all the tests and whatnot, that it still ends up having mechanical/electrical issues. That the used car ends up driving good for the first month or so, and then begins to break down. Thats just my only fear.

I'd love to buy a new GS350, but I don't have $50k.

I've bought both kinds. CPO is great with the 100k warranty and it has to meet certain guidelines. With used there are risks involved if something goes wrong. Dealers don't like handling cars not bought by them.

CPO for me.

CPO is basically includes a $2,000 markup for the warranty that it comes with. It's hidden in the cost.

You can get a better deal on a used, but expect to pay $2k for a warranty.

18k less is a lot of miles, and that also includes one less major service (every 15k miles) which also get pricey. All in all, if it was used vs used, 18k miles would not be a good price in savings. Used vs CPO though with the CPO having less miles, and come with a pretty good warranty, the price is not that bad. You can also always haggle down the pricing, but the cheapest CPO extended warranty I have heard is $1,600.

A car can pass as many test as you want, but a lot of the costly mechanical breakdowns just happen in a flash, i.e, you can't tell when a piston will blow until it just happens. If your fear is the used car will break down, and used cars do since you don't know how much abuse they put through (I feel sorry for the next person buying my car!), than you definately want the CPO as it will give you peace of mind if/when something breaks.

I'd love to buy a new GS350, but I don't have $50k.
That's the thing I learned about used cars now. Before, I would buy new cars, and my wife bought a new car last year. This time around though, for the price of a new IS 250, I bought a CPO IS 350 in great condition. For the price of a new GS350, you can buy a CPO LS460 in great condition -> http://www.longolexus.com/VehicleSea...460&make=Lexus

Go with the CPO, finding the right used car is hard, and Lexus just did most of the work for you, and you really can't beat the CPO warranty backed by Lexus

Buying used is a little nerve racking, so take it on a longer test drive, spend some time with it, have a friend trail you on the street and stomp on it, make sure it does not have an odd color exhaust, then buy it

With due respect, the Major service is bull ****. There is nothing like that anymore.
Just change spark plugs at 60k and oil every 5000-7500 miles.

Got my IS300 as a CPO, and got my door actuator replaced under warranty.
