reading the forums, the e55 seems to have a stronger engine / drivetrain overall compared to e63. a few owners (from both sides) told me the same.

and getting more power out of e55 is a lot easier than e63 obviously.

price wise, e55 is much cheaper now as well coz' it's older. a 05/06 with decent miles, you can get them for mid 20s, can you believe that?

I would like to know
tough question. and the funny thing is, i know quite a few m5 and e55 owners (only 2 e63 owners), and "surprisingly", none of them have big problems with their cars at all. and they do drive their cars. even my m3 i haven't had much issues with it and it's been almost 2 yrs. my feeling is the m and amg cars are better built overall.

but if i have to say, the supercharger on the e55 can always be a time bomb, it's just one more thing to go wrong.

Thanks Henry.

I don't worry about their engine/tranny.
We all know german's electrical is not their best attribute (esp. in the past)

if i had to get one myself, it'd be the e63. luxury, performance, and it doesn't really age in terms of exterior. even the e55 doesn't age. refined and elegant fron gen to gen.

None of the above.

My business partner had an E60, blue with cream interior, that was a total beast. That being said, I'd rather save the extra pennies for the new F10. If all the hype and speculation is true, it is going to be a segment game changer.

I love both the E39 and E60 M5's

Damn it Mike, this is a tough decision!

On one hand, the M5 is just awesome in terms of styling and the V10 is just screaming and is stupid fast

On the other hand, the E55/E63 is more comfy, styling is more aggressive than the M5 and it's stupid fast.

I'd go with the M5 just cause it's more engaging

I love the E60 M5's looks, but it's negatives are too much for me to ignore:

1) SMG transmission is very rough and slow IMO even in S6
2) They need 1 liter of oil about every 1000 miles
3) Many occurrences of a "cog of death" transmission problem on 2006 models
4) Most owners only get about 200 miles out of a full tank (10-12mpg)

I voted for the E63.

lol wait till you see the gas mileage on the e63, which is not any better at all

and for the oil, it depends on your driving. if you drive like a mad man and shift at 7000rpm all the time, then yup, very often. otherwise, adding 1/2 liter every 3000 miles seem to be normal from what i hear

hahha yup, electronics. i find it really hit and miss. but i guess overall over 80k miles, i start to carry the "worry" word around.

trust me, i spent enough time looking at e60 m5 and w211 e55 the past 2 months when i was this close from getting rid of my gs350. of course, we decided to keep the gs350, but man, the prices of the m5 and e55 are so attractive.

even more interesting? depreciation on mb is just plainly horrible. if you look at same year m5 vs e55/63 (06+), you will see that mb are always like 10k cheaper. the gap is huge. i can't seem to understand why

Gas mileage may be similar, but fueleconomy.gov says the E63 gets 285 miles per tank vs M5's 216. It's not so much the fuel efficiency as much as the inconvenience of filling up that often.

ah, i see your point on that. e class has noticeably larger gas tank (i think like 2g more?), so you can definitely go further

285? That would be nice. I usually have to fill-up around the 220 mark.

That'd be around the 165 mark if you drove the M5
