No, not many cars can achieve well over 100 mpg by hypermiling. Some Prius owners have achieved over 150 mpg by hypermiling. Few cars can do that, even with hypermiling.
I guess we should all be full of unanimous praise then that such a slow car achieved such fuel economy.
I looked up the acceleration figures for the Passat BlueMotion, and 0-60 is 12.4 seconds, compared to the Prius which would be 9.8 seconds.

my guess is the Passat BlueMotion was not built for speed...it was built for efficiency....

Don't forget the 20.4 gallon tank and the possibility of a diesel hybrid. Oh yea, carbon fiber to reduce weight and its own nuclear generator for battery recharge. It'll hit 2,000 miles/tank easily. You may see one in the near future because Toyota can make one. Any other company trying to doing the same is desperate for attention.

Yup because only speed demons care about mpg. 0-60 in 12.4 second is slow by today's standard against traditional compact cars like the Civic, but it's more than enough for the city dwellers. I've seen early 80s rust-bucket edition Corollas doing quite well on the highway. After all, most of them are cruising, not accelerating. If my top priority was fuel economy, I'd take the one with better mpg even if I had to sacrifice 2 seconds off a WOT run to 60mph that is already **** slow anyways.

75 MPG is impressive. And as far as I'm concerned that's the only figure that matters.
This record based on a tank is hardly relevant since tank sizes vary by vehicle. And since this Passat's tank is unusually large, the record is inflated. Most SUV's don't even hold 20 gallons. A Prius tank is only a little more than half that size.
Since range is part efficiency part fuel capacity, it isn't simply a true measure of efficiency. That's why only MPG truly matters. Nevertheless, range does carry value.
